Greece: Road Surface Data

This dataset provides detailed information on road surfaces from OpenStreetMap (OSM), distinguishing between **paved** and **unpaved** roads across the region. Surface classification is derived using a hybrid deep learning approach. For methodological details, see: http://arxiv.org/abs/2410.19874 Recently, we also published a new country-level dataset based on PlanetScope satellite imagery with near-complete coverage of all arterial roads. It is available on HDX under the name Greece **Planet** Road Surface. The corresponding paper is available at: https://arxiv.org/abs/2512.04092 Road Surface Statistics Approximately 0.498 million km of roads are mapped in OSM in this region. Based on AI-derived estimates: - Paved roads: 0.0939 million km (18.8548%) - Unpaved roads: 0.0422 million km (8.4667%) About 0.3619 million km (72.6785%) of road surface information is missing in OSM. To reduce this gap, the Mapillary-derived road surface dataset provides an additional 0.0008 million km (0.2187%) of the missing surface information. Intended Use This dataset supports transportation planning, infrastructure analysis, climate emissions assessment, and GIS applications. AI Features - **pred_class**: Model-predicted surface class ("paved" or "unpaved") - **pred_label**: Binary label (0 = paved, 1 = unpaved) - **osm_surface_class**: Surface classification derived from OSM tags - **combined_surface_osm_priority**: Combined classification prioritizing OSM - **combined_surface_DL_priority**: Combined classification prioritizing DL prediction - **n_of_predictions_used**: Number of predictions used for estimation - **predicted_length**: Predicted length based on DL estimation (meters) - **DL_mean_timestamp**: Mean timestamp of predictions used OSM Attributes - **name** - **name:en** - **name:* (local language)** - **highway** - **surface** - **smoothness** - **width** - **lanes** - **oneway** - **bridge** - **layer** - **source** Urban Classification Attributes - **continent** - **country_iso_a2** - **urban** (0 = rural, 1 = urban) - **urban_area** - **osm_id** - **osm_type** Data Sources The dataset originates from OpenStreetMap (OSM) and is augmented with deep learning predictions based on Mapillary street-level imagery, combined with the GHSU Global Human Settlement Urban Layer 2019 and AFRICAPOLIS 2020 urban layer. Greece - Wildfire in Central Macedonia, Greece (EMSR918)

This dataset contains Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping products for activation EMSR918. On 13 August 2026 at 12:00 CET, a wildfire started in the Chalkidiki Regional Unit of the Central Macedonia Region, Greece, near the village of Siviri. The residents of Siviri and Fourka were evacuated, while more than 170 firefighters and 15 aerial assets were involved in suppression operations, supported by municipal machinery and volunteer organisations. Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping was requested to provide initial rough estimation, fire extent and damage assessment emergency mapping. **Citation:** Copernicus Emergency Management Service (© 2026 European Union), EMSR918 **Product types present in this dataset's resources:** **DEL (Delineation)**: maps the extent of the event itself (eg. flood, fire, landslide boundary). Where a GeoPackage download is available for an Area of Interest/round, it already contains every layer with its official Copernicus styling and colours - prefer it in GIS software over the zipped shapefile download.

Greece - Wildfire In Skyros, Greece (EMSR923)

This dataset contains Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping products for activation EMSR923. On 15 August 2026 at 13:50 CET, a wildfire started on the island of Skyros, in the Region of Sterea Ellada, near the village of Atsitsa, burning dense pine forest. At that time, the fire was ongoing, and more than 80 firefighters and 11 aerial assets were deployed for fire suppression operations, assisted by municipal vehicles and machinery, as well as volunteer organizations. Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping was requested to provide an initial rough estimation, fire extent delineation, and damage assessment emergency mapping. **Citation:** Copernicus Emergency Management Service (© 2026 European Union), EMSR923 **Product types present in this dataset's resources:** **DEL (Delineation)**: maps the extent of the event itself (eg. flood, fire, landslide boundary). Greece - Flood in Crete, Greece (EMSR933)

This dataset contains Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping products for activation EMSR933. On 01 October 2026, a severe rainfall and flooding event was reported to have affected Crete, Greece. The event was ongoing and intensifying, with damage reported to have affected buildings, critical infrastructure, transportation networks, agricultural areas and private properties. Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping was requested to provide flood extent and damage assessment emergency mapping. **Citation:** Copernicus Emergency Management Service (© 2026 European Union), EMSR933 **Product types present in this dataset's resources:** **DEL (Delineation)**: maps the extent of the event itself (eg. flood, fire, landslide boundary). **GRA (Grading)**: assesses damage to individual features (eg. buildings, infrastructure). Where a GeoPackage download is available for an Area of Interest/round, it already contains every layer with its official Copernicus styling and colours - prefer it in GIS software over the zipped shapefile download.

Greece - Wildfire in Trapezitsa Mountain, Greece (EMSR929)

This dataset contains Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping products for activation EMSR929. On August 31, 2026, at 16.00 UTC, in Trapezitsa Mountain, near the city of Konitsa, Ipirus Region, Greece, a fire started due to a lightning, which mainly burned underground. At the time the fire was ongoing, burning a forest of black pine. A large number of firefighters and aerial means were used for fire suppression, assisted by municipality vehicles/machinery and volunteer organisations.Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping was requested to provide initial rough estimation, fire extent and damage assessment emergency mapping. **Citation:** Copernicus Emergency Management Service (© 2026 European Union), EMSR929 **Product types present in this dataset's resources:** **DEL (Delineation)**: maps the extent of the event itself (eg. flood, fire, landslide boundary). **GRA (Grading)**: assesses damage to individual features (eg. buildings, infrastructure).
