About this dataset

**UNOSAT code: FL20191205COG** This map illustrates satellite-detected flood waters along the Congo River over, Loukoléla, Loukoléla District, Cuvette Department in Republic of Congo as observed from Pleiades-1 imagery acquired on 29 November 2019. 136 ha of potential flood waters and 168 potentially flooded structures have been identified in Loukoléla and its vicinity. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to UNITAR -UNOSAT.

Documentation

UNOSAT datasets and maps are produced using a variety of methods. In general, analysts closely review satellite imagery, often comparing two or more images together, and determine notable changes between the images. For damage assessments, refugee or IDP assessments, and similar analyses, these changes are then manually documented in the vector data by the analyst. For flood extractions, landcover mapping and similar analyses, a variety of automated remote sensing techniques are used to extract the relevant information which is then reviewed and revised as necessary by the analyst. In all cases, resulting data is then loaded into a standardized UNOSAT geodatabase and exported asshapefiles for dissemination. This is a preliminary assessment and has not yet been validated in the field. It is important to consider the characteristics of the source imagery used in the analyses when interpreting results. For damage assessments it should be noted that only significant damage to the structural integrity of the buildings analyzed can be seen in imagery, while minor damage such as cracks or holes may not be visible at all. For flood extractions using radar data it is important to note that urban areas and highly vegetated areas may mask the flood signature and result in underestimation of flood waters. Users with specific questions or concerns should contact unosat@unitar.org to seek clarification.

Satellite detected water extents between 03 and 07 December 2021 in Cuvette department, Republic of Congo

**UNOSAT code: FL20211208COG** This map illustrates cumulative satellite-detected water using VIIRS in Republic of Congo between 03 to 07 December 2021 compared with the period between 26 to 30 November 2021. Within the cloud free analyzed areas of about 335,000 km2, a total of about 3,500 km2 of lands appear to be affected with flood waters. Water extent appears to have decreased of about 300 km2 since the period between 26 to 30 November 2021. Based on HRSL population data and the detected surface waters, the potentially exposed population of ~190,000 people is mainly located in department of Likouala with ~ 94,000 people, Brazzaville with ~ 70,000 people and Plateaux with ~10,000 people. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to the United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT).

Satellite detected waters extents, as of 5 November 2019 over Ouaka Prefecture of Central African Republic

**UNOSAT code: FL20191028CAF** This map illustrates satellite-detected surface water in Ouaka Prefecture of Central African Republic, as observed from Sentinel-1 imagery acquired on 5 November 2019. Within the analysed extent of about 2,000 km2, a total about 10 km2 of land appear to be flooded. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to UNITAR -UNOSAT. Important note: Flood analysis with Sentinel-1 imagery may notably underestimate the presence of standing water in built up areas due to backscattering of the radar signal.
