About this dataset

The CAMS Global Fire Assimilation System (GFAS) utilises satellite observations of fire radiative power (FRP) to provide near-real-time information on the location, relative intensity and estimated emissions from biomass burning and vegetation fires. Emissions are estimated by conversion of FRP observations to the dry matter (DM) consumed by the fire, and application of emission factors to DM for different biomes, based on field and laboratory studies. Provided as continuous raster GeoTIFFs.

Burnt Areas (MODIS)

Global burned area polygons derived from MODIS satellite imagery, providing information on spatial and temporal attributes of areas affected by fires. Fires are mapped using a semi-automatic procedure. Provided as GeoJSON. Note: the dates reported as Start date and Last update may not correspond to the date of ignition and extinction of the fire.

Fire Danger Forecast

The fire danger forecast provides daily fire danger indices. The continuous raster GeoTIFFs in this dataset are from the ECMWF (~8 km) and NASA Geos-5 (~28 km) models. The Fire Weather Index (FWI) is computed from the ECMWF and NASA Geos-5 models. The FWI is mapped in 6 classes: low, medium, high, very high, extreme and very extreme. The "Very Extreme" class was introduced in June 2021 to discriminate against extensive areas initially classified at "Extreme" in the Mediterranean region during summer months, and includes areas with FWI values above 70.

FAOSTAT: Climate Change: Agrifood systems emissions: Emissions from Fires

The FAOSTAT domain on Emissions from Fires consists of estimates of methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions generated from biomass burning in a range of vegetation types and from fires in organic soils.

VIIRS/JPSS2 Thermal Anomalies and Fire Daily L3 Global 1km SIN Grid V002

The daily NOAA-21 Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Thermal Anomalies and Fire (VJ214A1) Version 2 data product provides daily information about active fires and other thermal anomalies. The VJ214A1 data product is a global, 1 kilometer (km) gridded composite of fire pixels detected from VIIRS 750 meter (m) bands over a daily (24-hour) period. The VJ214 data products are designed after the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Thermal Anomalies/Fire product suite. The VJ214A1 product provides a total of four Science Dataset (SDS) variables for the confidence of fire, maximum fire radiative power (FRP), quality assessment (QA), and position of fire within scan. Each data product file is provided in HDF-EOS5 format. A low resolution browse is also provided showing the fire mask variable with a color map applied in JPEG format.
