The FAOSTAT domain on Land Cover data under the Agri-Environmental Indicators section contains land cover information organized by the land cover classes of the international standard system for Environmental and Economic Accounting Central Framework (SEEA CF). The land cover information is compiled from publicly available Global Land Cover (GLC) maps: a) MODIS land cover types based on the Land Cover Classification System, LCCS; b) The European Spatial Agency (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (CCI) annual land cover maps produced by the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL)-Geomatics and now under the European Copernicus Program; c) The annual land cover maps which were produced under the European Copernicus Global Land Service (CGLS) (CGLS land cover, containing discrete land cover categorization), with spatial resolution 100m; and d) the WorldCover maps of the European Space Agency, produced at 10m resolution.
This experimental land cover dataset at continental scale (Level 2) shows a broad classification aiming at identifying cultivated land and, more specifically, distinguishing between irrigated and rainfed areas. It is published on a yearly basis, while seasonal products are available upon request. The data is provided from January 2009 to 2022. **Data publication:** 2020-01-01 **Supplemental Information:** No data value: 255 Unit : class Scale Factor : 1.0 Map code : L2-LCC-A Class - Caption 0 - n.a 20 - Shrubland 30 - Grassland 41 - Cropland, rainfed 42 - Cropland, irrigated or under water management 43 - Cropland, fallow 50 - Built-up 60 - Bare / sparse vegetation 70 - Permament snow / ice 80 - Water bodies 81 - Temporary water bodies 90 - Shrub or herbaceous cover, flooded 111 - Tree cover: closed, evergreen needle-leaved 112 - Tree cover: closed, evergreen broadleaved 114 - Tree cover: closed, deciduous broadleaved 115 - Tree cover: closed, mixed type 116 - Tree cover: closed, unknown type 121 - Tree cover: open, evergreen needle-leaved 122 - Tree cover: open, evergreen broadleaved 123 - Tree cover: open, deciduous needle-leaved 124 - Tree cover: open, deciduous broadleaved 125 - Tree cover: open, mixed type 126 - Tree cover: open, unknown type 200 - Sea water 255 - no data **Citation:** FAO 2018. The Level 1 land cover products were derived from the Global Land Service of Copernicus, the Earth Observation programme of the European Commission. This product was generated from MODIS data, using the Copernicus training data and operational workflow, modified to account for differences in spatial resolution and the delivered land cover classes. In addition, irrigated areas are identified by applying a water deficit index that takes into consideration seasonal cumulated values of precipitation and actual evapotranspiration. The classification applied is based on the Land Cover Classification System (LCCS) that was developed by FAO. Data component developed through collaboration with the FRAME Consortium. More information can be found at: http://www.fao.org/in-action/remote-sensing-for-water-productivity/en/. Until December 2019 the base input layers (NDVI, albedo, and fAPAR) for the Level 2 (100m) products were derived from the Proba-V satellite. Proba-V was decommissioned in June 2020. From January 2020 onwards the base input layers of NDVI, albedo and fAPAR for level 2 are derived from the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission. **Class - Caption** 0 - n.a. 20 - Shrubland 30 - Grassland 20 - Shrubland 30 - Grassland 41 - Cropland, rainfed 42 - Cropland, irrigated or under water management 43 - Cropland, fallow 50 - Built-up 60 - Bare / sparse vegetation 70 - Permament snow / ice 80 - Water bodies 81 - Temporary water bodies 90 - Shrub or herbaceous cover, flooded 111 - Tree cover: closed, evergreen needle-leaved 112 - Tree cover: closed, evergreen broadleaved 114 - Tree cover: closed, deciduous broadleaved 115 - Tree cover: closed, mixed type 116 - Tree cover: closed, unknown type 121 - Tree cover: open, evergreen needle-leaved 122 - Tree cover: open, evergreen broadleaved 123 - Tree cover: open, deciduous needle-leaved 124 - Tree cover: open, deciduous broadleaved 125 - Tree cover: open, mixed type 126 - Tree cover: open, unknown type 200 - Sea water 255 - no data **Resource constraints:** Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC-BY-4.0) **Online resources:** Download the data from Google Cloud Storage
The Digital Soil Map of the World is a global vector dataset based on the original FAO-UNESCO World Soil Map, published in 10 volumes and 19 cartographic sheets from 1972 to 1977. The digitized soil map, in geographic projection (latitude - longitude) and at a scale of 1:5,000,000, was intersected with a layer containing hydrographic features (coasts, lakes, glaciers, and dual-course rivers) and, with the exception of the African continent, with the map of national boundaries obtained from the World Data Bank II (United States Government) updated in January 1994 at a scale of 1:3,000,000. For Africa, national boundaries were derived from the boundaries of the Original FAO/UNESCO World Soil Map of the World. In both cases, national boundaries have been verified and, where necessary, adjusted based on FAO and UN conventions. The Digital Soil Map of the World in PDF and GIS formats is available for download in the **Data and Resources** section of this metadata. Maps and legends can be also found on the **FAO Soil Portal**, along with the related reports, for the following regions: North America, Mexico and Central America, South America, Europe, Asia, South Asia, North and Central Asia, Southeast Asia, and Australasia. **Data revision:** 2007-02-28 **Contact points:** Resource Contact: [ Land and Water Division](mailto:land-and-water@fao.org) Metadata Contact: [FAO-Data](mailto:fao-data@fao.org) **Data lineage:** More information regarding the production and use of the digital soil map of the world can be found in the layer (.lyr), legend (.avl), readme and excel files contained in the zip files available for download. Please note that the Digital Soil Map of the World is also available in a raster version at 5 arc minutes resolution. **Resource constraints:** This work is made available under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC-BY-4.0) **Online resources:** Digital Soil Map of the World - ESRI shapefile format Digital Soil Map of the World - Erdas format Digital Soil Map of the World (by Regions) - Erdas format Digital Soil Map of the World - IDRISI format Digital Soil Map of the World - high resolution map (PDF format - 28MB) Harmonized World Soil Database FAO Soils Portal: FAO/UNESCO Soil Map of the World
The Landsat-Derived Global Rainfed and Irrigated-Cropland Product (LGRIP) provides high resolution, global cropland data to assist and address food and water security issues of the twenty-first century. As an extension of the Global Food Security-support Analysis Data (GFSAD) project, LGRIP maps the world’s agricultural lands by dividing them into irrigated and rainfed croplands and calculates irrigated and rainfed areas for every country in the world. LGRIP data are produced using Landsat 8 time-series satellite sensor data for the 2014-2017 time period to create a nominal 2015 product. Each LGRIP 30 meter resolution GeoTIFF file contains a contains a layer that identifies areas of rainfed cropland (cropland areas that are purely dependent on direct precipitation), irrigated cropland (cropland that had at least one irrigation during the crop growing period), non-cropland, and water bodies over a 10° by 10° area, as well as an accuracy assessment of the product. A low-resolution browse image is also available.
