About this dataset

**UNOSAT code: FL20240912MMR** This map illustrates satellite detected floods using WorldView-3 images acquired on 02 October 2024. Within the analysed area of about 23 km², a total of about 21 km² of land appears to be affected by flood waters with about 18 km² of cropland inundated. UNITAR-UNOSAT identified approximately 2,240 affected buildings, representing 94% of the buildings as well as 35 km of affected roads, covering 88% of the roads in the analysed area. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to the United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT).

Documentation

UNOSAT datasets and maps are produced using a variety of methods. In general, analysts closely review satellite imagery, often comparing two or more images together, and determine notable changes between the images. For damage assessments, refugee or IDP assessments, and similar analyses, these changes are then manually documented in the vector data by the analyst. For flood extractions, landcover mapping and similar analyses, a variety of automated remote sensing techniques are used to extract the relevant information which is then reviewed and revised as necessary by the analyst. In all cases, resulting data is then loaded into a standardized UNOSAT geodatabase and exported asshapefiles for dissemination. This is a preliminary assessment and has not yet been validated in the field. It is important to consider the characteristics of the source imagery used in the analyses when interpreting results. For damage assessments it should be noted that only significant damage to the structural integrity of the buildings analyzed can be seen in imagery, while minor damage such as cracks or holes may not be visible at all. For flood extractions using radar data it is important to note that urban areas and highly vegetated areas may mask the flood signature and result in underestimation of flood waters. Satellite detected water extents in central part of Myanmar as of 15 September 2024

**UNOSAT code: FL20240912MMR** This map illustrates the floods using Gaofen-3 images acquired on 15 September 2024 at 11:45 UTC (local time). Within the analysed area of about 52,000 km², a total of about 2,000 km² of land appears to be affected by flood waters. Based on Worldpop spatial demographic data, about 312,000 people are exposed or living close to flooded areas. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to the United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT). Important note: Flood analysis from radar images may underestimate the presence of standing waters in built-up areas and densely vegetated areas due to the backscattering properties of the radar signal.

Flood Impact assessment of Mueang Ubon Ratchathani, Warin Chamrap, and Sawang Wirawong Districts, Ubon Ratchathani Province, Thailand as of 20 October 2022

**UNOSAT code TC20220928THA, GDACS Id: 1000922** This map illustrates satellite-detected surface waters in Ubon Ratchathani Province, Thailand as observed from a GeoEye-1 image acquired on 20 October 2022 at 10:35 local time. Within the analysis extent of this map, about 120 km² of lands appear to be flooded. Based on Worldpop population data and the detected surface waters within the analysis extent, approximately 32,000 people are potentially exposed to or living close to flooded areas along with 11,330 structures and approximately 400 km roads potentially damaged by flooding. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT).

Satellite detected water extents in Mandalay, Kayah, Shan (South), Nay Pyi Taw, Bago (Est), Mon and Kayin States, Myanmar as of 03 & 23 September 2024

**UNOSAT code: FL20240912MMR** This map illustrates aggregated satellite detected floods using Sentinel-1 images acquired on 03 to 20 September 2024 using an automated analysis with a machine learning method. Within the analysed area of about 80,000 km², a total of about 5,100 km² of land appears to be affected by flood waters and about 4,500 km² of cropland appears to be inundated. Based on Worldpop spatial demographic data, about 760,000 people are exposed or living close to flooded areas.

Destroyed buildings in Maungdaw and Buthindaung townships, Maungdaw District, Myanmar

This map illustrates satellite-detected destroyed or otherwise damaged structures in Maungdaw and Buthindaung townships, Maungdaw District, Myanmar. The analysis found a total area of more than 400 thousand square meters of destroyed structures occurring between 16 and 25 September 2017. This represents an increase of approximately 2% since last UNOSAT analysis with imagery collected on 16 September, when more than 20 square kilometers of destroyed structures were identified. Additionally, 122 fires were detected within the area between 16 and 25 September 2017 by the MODIS and VIIRS sensors, with recent fire detections indicating destruction is likely ongoing. Most of the detected fires are located in the proximity of the affected areas as observed in the imagery collected 25 September. Finally, heavy cloud cover during the period in question, and on 16 and 25 September especially, indicates that destruction and fire detections are likely underestimated in this analysis. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to UNITAR - UNOSAT.

Destroyed buildings in Maungdaw District, Myanmar

This map illustrates satellite-detected destroyed or otherwise damaged structures in Maungdaw and Buthindaung townships, Maungdaw District, Myanmar, as seen in satellite imagery collected on 16 September 2017. The analysis found a total area of more than 20 square kilometers of destroyed structures within the 2,000 square kilometers analyzed. According to other data on town locations it is likely that more than 160 towns are affected within the area analyzed. Additionally, 144 fires were detected within the area between 25 August and 21 September 2017 by the MODIS and VIIRS sensors, with recent fire detections indicating destruction is likely ongoing. Most of the detected fires are located in the proximity of the affected areas as observed in the imagery collected 16 September. Finally, heavy cloud cover during the period in question, and on 16 September especially, indicates that destruction and fire detections are likely underestimated in this analysis. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to UNITAR - UNOSAT.
