Nepal Flash Flood: Damage Assessment using Sentinel-1 Radar

This dataset provides a rapid damage screening assessment for the 26 August 2026 Nepal flash flood and debris-flow event using 10-m Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data. A post-event radar acquisition acquired on 28 August 2026 was compared with a one-year pre-event Sentinel-1 baseline to identify unusually strong changes in radar backscatter. The resulting damage proxy was spatially averaged using a 50 m neighbourhood and restricted to a built-environment search domain (residential and non-residential) defined from pre-event Overture building footprints and a 30 m surrounding buffer. A conservative operational threshold (K50 absolute z-score ≥ 1.60) was used to identify high-confidence likely-damage/change areas. The resulting layer was visually reviewed at post-processing level to remove identified artefacts. Across the assessed area, approximately 245.13 ha of high-confidence change were identified within approximately 4755 ha of assessed built-environment domain across 58,557 ha of assessed AOI. Admin-3 summary statistics are provided for 16 municipalities intersecting the analysis area. The product is a likely-damage / unusual-change proxy and not proof of structural or building-level damage. It is intended to support rapid geographic prioritisation, complementary imagery review and field assessment.

Nepal Flooding: Road Blockages

We have assessed *primary and secondary roads* for signs of road blockages in the *Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Kathmandu* regions in Nepal. **Brief Overview: 28/08/2026 Dataset** -We found 22 road blockage locations (19 of these locations were severely flooded) -The NH42 road was highly impacted by flooding, and parts of NH03, NH18 and F181 roads were affected by flooding. -The data is held in a point shapefile format in WGS 84 EPSG: 4326. *This dataset is derived from crowd sourcing. The next data release is planned for 11/09/2026.* You can find the Planetary Response Network: Nepal Flash Flooding 2026 project we ran here.

Satellite detected water extent over Kaski and Syangja districts, Gandaki province, Nepal as of 4 July 2021

**UNOSAT code: FL20210630NPL** This map illustrates satellite-detected surface waters in Kaski and Syangja districts, Gandaki province, Nepal as observed from a Sentinel-2 image acquired on 4 July 2021 at 10:41 local time. Within the analyzed cloud free zones of about 500 km2, a total of about 25km2 of lands appear to be flooded. Based on Worldpop population data and the detected surface waters, about 17,000 people are potentially exposed or living close to flooded areas. The potentially exposed population is mainly located in the Kaski district with ~16,000 people. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT).

Satellite detected mudflow as of 11 October 2026 in Gorkha District, Gandaki Province, Nepal

**UNOSAT code: FL20261011NPL** This map illustrates the cumulative satellite-detected water extent derived from Sentinel-2 imagery acquired on 11 October 2026. Within the analysed area of about 470 km², approximately 18 km² of land appear to be affected by flood waters and/or mudflow. The analysis indicates that about 400 buildings were exposed to the mudflow and approximately 33 km of road were affected. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send any ground feedback to the United Nations Satellite Centre.

Nepal - Flood (EMSR927)

This dataset contains Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping products for activation EMSR927. On the 26 August 2026, a flash flood reportedly triggered by a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) in Nepal has caused significant damage in Rasuwa District. Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping was requested to provide flood extent and damage assessment emergency mapping. GDACS ID: FL1104124. **Citation:** Copernicus Emergency Management Service (© 2026 European Union), EMSR927 **Product types present in this dataset's resources:** **GRA (Grading)**: assesses damage to individual features (eg. buildings, infrastructure). Where a GeoPackage download is available for an Area of Interest/round, it already contains every layer with its official Copernicus styling and colours - prefer it in GIS software over the zipped shapefile download.

Crop Storage Final Location: Cereal (Nepal - ~ 1Km)

The 1km raster dataset represents top location score areas filtered by exclusive criteria: access to finance, distance to major roads and access to IT. The layer is produced under the scope of FAO’s Hand-in-Hand Initiative, Geographical Information Systems - Multicriteria Decision Analysis for value chain infrastructure location. The location score is achieved by processing sub-model outputs characterizing logistical factors for crop warehouse siting: Supply, demand, Infrastructure/accessibility. Access to finance and roads are defined using a linear distance threshold: • Banks - approx. 20 km (0.18 degree) buffer radius. • Major roads - approx. 2 km (0.018 degree) buffer radius. Access to IT is characterized applying the mobile broadband coverage map. **Data publication:** 2021-10-15 **Contact points:** Metadata Contact: [FAO-Data](mailto:fao-data@fao.org) Resource Contact: [Andry Rajaoberison](mailto:Andry.Rajaoberison@fao.org) **Data lineage:** lineage statement Major data sources, FAO GIS platform Hand-in-Hand and OpenStreetMap (open data) including the following datasets 1. Soil and Terrain Database (SOTER) for Nepal

The Soil and Terrain database for Nepal primary data (version 1.0), at scale 1:1 million (SOTER_Nepal). SOTER_Nepal is generalized from the original Soils and Terrain database of Nepal at scale 1:50,000 compiled by FAO and Nepal's Survey Dept. The SOTER_Nepal database provides generalized information on landform and soil properties at a scale 1:1 million. It consists of 17 SOTER units, ... characterized by 56 representative and four synthetic profiles for which there are no measured soil data. The SOTER database includes also attribute data of 99 profiles initially selected as references to soil components that have already a representative profile. SOTER forms a part of the ongoing activities of ISRIC and FAO to update the world's baseline information on natural resources. The project involved collaboration with national soil institutes from the countries in the region as well as individual experts
