About this dataset

This map illustrates satellite-detected flood water extent over Booco and Hagan areas, Hiraan region, Somalia using a Radarsat-2 image acquired on 09 May 2018. Within the extent of the map about 4,000 ha of land appear to be inundated and according to WorldPop data, ~22,000 people, live within the extent of this map about 6,500 within 100 meters distance from the flooded areas which corresponds to about 30% of population in this zone. It is likely that flood waters have been systematically underestimated along highly vegetated areas along main river banks and within built-up urban areas because of the special characteristics of the satellite data used. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to UNITAR UNOSAT.

Documentation

UNOSAT datasets and maps are produced using a variety of methods. In general, analysts closely review satellite imagery, often comparing two or more images together, and determine notable changes between the images. For damage assessments, refugee or IDP assessments, and similar analyses, these changes are then manually documented in the vector data by the analyst. For flood extractions, landcover mapping and similar analyses, a variety of automated remote sensing techniques are used to extract the relevant information which is then reviewed and revised as necessary by the analyst. In all cases, resulting data is then loaded into a standardized UNOSAT geodatabase and exported asshapefiles for dissemination. This is a preliminary assessment and has not yet been validated in the field. It is important to consider the characteristics of the source imagery used in the analyses when interpreting results. For damage assessments it should be noted that only significant damage to the structural integrity of the buildings analyzed can be seen in imagery, while minor damage such as cracks or holes may not be visible at all. For flood extractions using radar data it is important to note that urban areas and highly vegetated areas may mask the flood signature and result in underestimation of flood waters. Satellite detected water over Belet Weyne District,Hiraan Region, Somalia

This map illustrates satellite-detected flood water extent over the district of Belet Weyne, Hiraan region, Somalia using a SAR image from 06 May 2018 and an optical VHR image over Beledweyne town. More than 2800 km2 of lands were assessed and about 19,000 ha (190km2) appear to be inundated which corresponds to about to about 7% of the total analysed zone. In this analysed area and according to WorldPop data the population is estimated to ~126,000 people, ~ 32,000 live in the flooded zone and about 70,000 within 100 meters distance from the flooded areas.

Satellite detected water over Dinsoor, Baardheere, Bu'aale & Saakow district, Gedo, Middle Juba & Bay Region, Somalia

This map illustrates satellite-detected flood water extent over the district of Baardheere (Gedo Region), the districts of Saakow and Bu'aale (Middle Juba region) and the district of Diinsor (Bay region), Somalia using a Radarsat-2 image acquired on 09 May 2018. As observed from the satellite radar image, a total of 61,000 ha of land were inundated in the area of interest. By using WordPop data, we estimate that at least 100,000 people are potentially affected or living close to the potentially flood area. This correspond about 35% of the population living in the area of interest.
