About this dataset

This map illustrates satellite-detected possible flood water & saturated soil over Abu Hamad area in River Nile State, Sudan, extracted from Spot-6 imagery of 14 August 2016. UNOSAT analysis shows an increase of floods water / saturated soil around Nileside west and Abu Tin areas. This analysis has not yet been validated in the field. Documentation

UNOSAT datasets and maps are produced using a variety of methods. In general, analysts closely review satellite imagery, often comparing two or more images together, and determine notable changes between the images. For damage assessments, refugee or IDP assessments, and similar analyses, these changes are then manually documented in the vector data by the analyst. For flood extractions, landcover mapping and similar analyses, a variety of automated remote sensing techniques are used to extract the relevant information which is then reviewed and revised as necessary by the analyst. In all cases, resulting data is then loaded into a standardized UNOSAT geodatabase and exported asshapefiles for dissemination. This is a preliminary assessment and has not yet been validated in the field. It is important to consider the characteristics of the source imagery used in the analyses when interpreting results. For damage assessments it should be noted that only significant damage to the structural integrity of the buildings analyzed can be seen in imagery, while minor damage such as cracks or holes may not be visible at all. For flood extractions using radar data it is important to note that urban areas and highly vegetated areas may mask the flood signature and result in underestimation of flood waters. Sudan - Possible Flood Water & Saturated Soil Over Khartoum Area, Khartoum State

This map illustrates satellite-detected possible flood water & saturated soil over Khartoum City in Suda nextracted from SPOT-7 imagery on 15 August 2016 in Khartoum State. UNOSAT analysis shows, an expansion of possible flood water and saturated soil over areas particulary located on right bank of the Blue Nile and White Nile, without causing floods inside build up areas. Detected water bodies likely reflect an underestimation of all flood-affected areas within the map extent. This analysis has not yet been validated in the field. Satellite detected water extent in Abu Hamad Locality, River Nile State, Sudan as of 19 August 2024

**UNOSAT code: FL20240826SDN, GDACS ID: 1102854** This map illustrates satellite-detected water extent in Abu Hamad Locality, River Nile State, Sudan as observed from a Sentinel-2 satellite image acquired on 19 August 2024 at 10:06 local time (08:06 UTC). Within analysed area of about 1,800 km², a total of about 28 km² of land appears to be affected by floodwaters. Based on Worldpop population data and the flood extent, approximately 400 people are potentially exposed or living close to flooded areas. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to the United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT)

Sudan - Evolution of Possible Flood Water & Saturated Soil Over Khartoum City, Khartoum State

This map illustrates evolution of satellite detected waters over the central part of Khartoum City, Sudan, extracted from TerraSAR-X imagery (3 m) acquired on 11 August 2016 and SPOT-7 on 15 August 2016 (1.5 m). During this period, it has been observed that the water expansion is predominantly located in areas along Nile river banks. Additionally, the analysis carried out by UNITAR-UNOSAT also shows water expansion on the right bank of the Blue Nile and on the left and right banks of the White Nile. This analysis has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to UNITAR-UNOSAT.

Sudan - Possible Flood Water & Saturated Soil over Sennar and Signa Area, Sennar State

This map illustrates satellite-detected possible flood water & saturated soil over Sennar State, extracted from Radarsar-2 imagery acquired 12 August 2016. UNOSAT has analysed the area using a Radarsat-2 image acquired on 12 August 2016 to identify and delineate the Possible Flood Water & Saturated / Wet Soil. According to satellite derived analysis some areas within Sennar State seem to be flooded. In addition, and the Blue Nile increased its size especially in the right bank, without apparently causing floods inside build up areas. The exact limit of flood waters is uncertain because of the low spatial resolution of the satellite data used for this analysis. Detected water bodies likely reflect an underestimation of all flood-affected areas within the map extent. This analysis has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to UNITAR - UNOSAT.
