The EnviroAtlas One Meter-scale Urban Land Cover (MULC) Data were generated individually for each EnviroAtlas community to provide a detailed view of the urban environment for analysis of multiple human and ecosystem health metrics and services. Source imagery varies by community. Land cover classes mapped also vary by community and include the following: water, impervious surfaces, soil and barren land, trees, shrub, grass and herbaceous, agriculture, orchards, woody wetlands, and emergent wetlands. Accuracy assessments were completed for each community's classification. For specific information about methods and accuracy of each community's land cover classification, consult their individual metadata records: Austin, TX; Cleveland, OH; Des Moines, IA; Durham, NC; Fresno, CA; Green Bay, WI; Memphis, TN; Milwaukee, WI; Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN; New Bedford, MA; New York, NY; Phoenix, AZ; Pittsburgh, PA; Portland, ME; Paterson, NJ; Portland, OR; Tampa, FL; and Woodbine, IA.

This map estimates the percent tree cover within 26 meters of a busy road edge at any given point throughout the community. A “busy” roadway in EnviroAtlas is defined to include interstates, arterial roads, and collector roads. It does not include local or neighborhood roads, though some of these roads may also experience consistent and heavy traffic. For specific information about methods used to develop data for each community, consult their individual metadata records: Austin, TX; Birmingham, AL; Baltimore, MD; Brownsville, TX; Chicago, IL; Cleveland, OH; Des Moines, IA; Durham, NC; Fresno, CA; Green Bay, WI; Los Angeles, CA; Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN; Memphis, TN; Milwaukee, WI; New Bedford, MA; New Haven, CT; New York, NY; Philadelphia, PA; Phoenix, AZ; Pittsburgh, PA; Portland, ME; Paterson, NJ; Portland, OR; Salt Lake City, UT; Sonoma County, CA; St. Louis, MO; Tampa, FL; Virginia Beach/Williamsburg, VA; Washington, DC; and Woodbine, IA.

This EnviroAtlas dataset categorizes land cover into structural elements (e.g. core, edge, branch, etc.). It depicts core areas of forest, core fragmentation, and patterns of connectivity among core patches. Forest is treated as foreground in this dataset; forest land cover classes are separated from the all other land cover classes. This dataset was produced by the US EPA to support research and online mapping activities related to EnviroAtlas. EnviroAtlas (https://www.epa.gov/enviroatlas) allows the user to interact with a web-based, easy-to-use, mapping application to view and analyze multiple ecosystem services for the contiguous United States. The dataset is available as downloadable data (https://edg.epa.gov/data/Public/ORD/EnviroAtlas) or as an EnviroAtlas map service. Additional descriptive information about each attribute in this dataset can be found in its associated EnviroAtlas Fact Sheet (https://www.epa.gov/enviroatlas/enviroatlas-fact-sheets).
