About this dataset

This report considers present and recent past food security assessments for Afghanistan in the context of hydrology, climate change and conflict. Population comparisons by data source (UN OCHA, LandScan, WorldPop, and Gridded Population of the World) and rainfall anomalies from 2013-2016 accompany the report. The authors, Zainab al Badri, Atia Curtiss, and Zoe Garcia, completed their research in partial fulfillment of Public Health coursework in Medical Geography, for Spring 2017, at Drew University. Dr. Lisa Jordan edited the report and supplemented their work with additional spatial data.

Documentation

LandScan, WorldPop, and Gridded Population of the World (version 4) population data are modeled estimates based on geospatial and remotely sensed data sources, which vary by program. Rainfall data are derived from satellite observation: the NASA TRMM mission. Model estimates made in the past tend not to account for recent demographic changes caused by conflict and displacement.

This report explores food insecurity in Nigeria in the context of urbanization and demographic change. A comparison of changing acute food security measures (IPC) from January and February 2010-2018 accompanies the report. The authors, Jordan Burnett, Leah Nadel, Victoria Santiago, and Arline Tarazona, completed their research in partial fulfillment of Public Health coursework in Medical Geography, for Spring 2018, at Drew University. Afghanistan: Integrated Context Analysis (ICA), 2016

The ICA is a process of consultations supported by mapped-out data that produces a strategic plan describing where different combinations of programme themes are appropriate to achieve goals of reducing food insecurity and climate related shock risk. The ICA combines multi-year food security trends with natural shock risk data to highlight sub-national areas where different programme strategies make sense. Food security trend maps shows areas where safety nets can address regular food insecurity, and others where shocks make recovery more important. Climate-related natural shock risk maps show where DRR, preparedness and early warning efforts can complement food-security objectives. Atop this core foundation, mapped data on subjects including nutrition, gender, livelihoods and resilience can enrich theme-level strategic planning in which all pieces work together. The full group of ICA partners discuss these analytical results to arrive at strategic programmatic directions.
