About this dataset

This is a point dataset of road blockages in Jamaica and Haiti following Hurricane Melissa. The road blockages are marked by a single point, alongside the type of damage e.g. debris, flooding or coastal damage. The data is held in a shapefile format using the WGS 84 EPSG: 4326 projection. The Hurricane Melissa 2025 project data was collected via crowdsourcing on the Zooniverse platform.

Documentation

For this project we used PlanetScope 3m resolution imagery to assess road damage in Jamaica and Haiti after Hurricane Melissa. We asked twelve volunteers to categorise every one image on the Zooniverse platform. We asked volunteers to identify road blockages or bridge damage within the imagery. We generated a consensus from the raw data, and visualised this as a point dataset. The markings were then compared to satellite imagery by an expert. Jamaica Road Level Categorised: motorway, primary, secondary Haiti Road Level Categorised: primary, secondary, tertiary To see more about the project, you can view the project [here](https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/alicemead/planetary-response-network-hurricane-melissa-2025). We thank “Imagery © 2025 Planet Labs Inc.” for the satellite imagery, and HOT for the roads, airports and ports vector layers used for this project.
