Documentation

UNOSAT datasets and maps are produced using a variety of methods. In general, analysts closely review satellite imagery, often comparing two or more images together, and determine notable changes between the images. For damage assessments, refugee or IDP assessments, and similar analyses, these changes are then manually documented in the vector data by the analyst. For flood extractions, landcover mapping and similar analyses, a variety of automated remote sensing techniques are used to extract the relevant information which is then reviewed and revised as necessary by the analyst. In all cases, resulting data is then loaded into a standardized UNOSAT geodatabase and exported asshapefiles for dissemination. This is a preliminary assessment and has not yet been validated in the field. It is important to consider the characteristics of the source imagery used in the analyses when interpreting results. For damage assessments it should be noted that only significant damage to the structural integrity of the buildings analyzed can be seen in imagery, while minor damage such as cracks or holes may not be visible at all. For flood extractions using radar data it is important to note that urban areas and highly vegetated areas may mask the flood signature and result in underestimation of flood waters. Damage Assessment in Kutupalong Refugee Camp, Palong Khali Union, Bangladesh

This map illustrates satellite-detected possible damaged shelter structures in Kutupalong Refugee Camp, Palong Khali Union and Cox Bazar District, Chittagong Division, Bangladesh. The UNITAR-UNOSAT analysis used Pleiades satellite imagery acquired the 6th and the 7th June 2017 as post-images. The UNITAR-UNOSAT analysis identified 1,105 possible damaged shelter structures within the extent of the camp. Kindly note that the number of possible shelter damaged structures could have been under or overestimated in some areas due to the cloud cover and the delimitation of the camp extent. Damage Assessment in Leda Refugee Camp, Nhilla Union, Bangladesh

This map illustrates satellite-detected potentially affected shelters in Leda refugee camp in Nhilla Union, Cox s Bazar District, and Chittagong Division of Bangladesh. About 18,350 people are registered in this camp. The UNITAR-UNOSAT analysis used a Pleiades satellite image acquired 05 June 2017 and could identify 215 possible damaged shelter structures within the extent of the camp. Kindly note that the number of damaged shelters could have been underestimated as some groups of shelter structures might be identified as one structure. Building Damage Assessment in Panganiban City, Catanduanes Province, Bicol Region, The Philippines as of 18 November 2024

**UNOSAT code: TC20241117PHL, GDACS ID: 1001124** This map provides an analysis of structures potentially impacted by Typhoon Man-Yi, utilizing imagery from the Pleiades satellite acquired on 18 and 20 November 2024. Within the defined analysis area, UNOSAT has identified 23 structures as damaged and 82 as potentially damaged. Out of a total of 1,174 buildings identified within the analysis extent, this represents approximately 9% of buildings as damaged.
