About this dataset

**UNOSAT code: FL20250220BWA, GDACS ID: 1103128** Satellite detected water extents in Gaborone, South East and Kgatleng Districts, Botswana as of 4 March 2025 This map illustrates the satellite-detected accumulated flood extent in Gaborone, South East District, Botswana, as observed from multisatellite imagery, including Sentinel-2, PlanetScope, and Kanopus-V, acquired on 4 March 2025. Within the analyzed area of approximately 700 km², an estimated 7 km² remains affected by floodwaters. Floodwaters have receded by about 23 km² since 23 and 25 February 2025. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to the United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT).

Documentation

UNOSAT datasets and maps are produced using a variety of methods. In general, analysts closely review satellite imagery, often comparing two or more images together, and determine notable changes between the images. For damage assessments, refugee or IDP assessments, and similar analyses, these changes are then manually documented in the vector data by the analyst. For flood extractions, landcover mapping and similar analyses, a variety of automated remote sensing techniques are used to extract the relevant information which is then reviewed and revised as necessary by the analyst. In all cases, resulting data is then loaded into a standardized UNOSAT geodatabase and exported asshapefiles for dissemination. This is a preliminary assessment and has not yet been validated in the field. It is important to consider the characteristics of the source imagery used in the analyses when interpreting results. For damage assessments it should be noted that only significant damage to the structural integrity of the buildings analyzed can be seen in imagery, while minor damage such as cracks or holes may not be visible at all. For flood extractions using radar data it is important to note that urban areas and highly vegetated areas may mask the flood signature and result in underestimation of flood waters. Satellite detected water extent over Maputo province, Mozambique as of 27 March 2024

**UNOSAT code: TC20240313MOZ, GDACS ID: 1001053** This map illustrates satellite detected surface waters in Maputo province, Mozambique, as observed from a Sentinel-1 images acquired on 27 March 2024 at 18:23 local time (16:23 UTC). Within the analyzed areas of about 2,000 km², a total of about 45 km² of lands appear to be flooded. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to the United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT). Important note: Flood analysis from radar images may underestimate the presence of standing waters in built-up areas and densely vegetated areas due to backscattering properties of the radar signal.

Mozambique - Satellite Detected Surface Waters Extent and Evolution along Save River

This map illustrates satellite-detected flood waters over Save River in Mozambique as observed from the Radarsat-2 images acquired on 17 February 2017 and 05 February 2017. A decrease of surface waters was observed in the 17 February 2017 image compared to the 05 February 2017 image along the Save river. It is likely that flood waters have been systematically underestimated along highly vegetated areas along main river banks and within built-up urban areas because of the special characteristics of the satellite data used. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to UNITAR UNOSAT.
