About this dataset

Retirement Notice: This item is in mature support as of March 2019 and will retire in December 2029. A replacement item has not been identified at this time. See Sunsetting Legacy Basemaps blog for more information. This map presents land cover and detailed topographic maps for the United States. The map includes the National Park Service (NPS) Natural Earth physical map at 1.24km per pixel for the world at small scales, i-cubed eTOPO 1:250,000-scale maps for the contiguous United States at medium scales, and National Geographic TOPO! 1:100,000 and 1:24,000-scale maps (1:250,000 and 1:63,000 in Alaska) for the United States at large scales. The TOPO! maps are seamless, scanned images of United States Geological Survey (USGS) paper topographic maps.  Known Issues: There is a known issue with minor positional shifts (~300 meters) of topo map sheets in the Alaska region.  Please be aware if using the topo map for orthorectification or similar purposes.

USGS 3DEP Seamless DEMs

U.S.-wide digital elevation data at horizontal resolutions ranging from one to sixty meters. The USGS 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) Datasets from the National Map are the primary elevation data product produced and distributed by the USGS. The 3DEP program provides raster elevation data for the conterminous United States, Alaska, Hawaii, and the island territories, at a variety of spatial resolutions. The seamless DEM layers produced by the 3DEP program are updated frequently to integrate newly available, improved elevation source data. DEM layers are available nationally at grid spacings of 1 arc-second (approximately 30 meters) for the conterminous United States, and at approximately 1, 3, and 9 meters for parts of the United States. Most seamless DEM data for Alaska is available at a resolution of approximately 60 meters, where only lower resolution source data exist.

Mature Support Notice: This item is in mature support as of December 2024. A new version of this item is available for your use. Esri recommends updating your maps and apps to use the new version. See blog for more information. This tile layer presents a vector basemap of OpenStreetMap (OSM) data hosted by Esri. This version of the map is rendered in a style similar to the Esri Navigation Dark Mode map. Created from the sunsetted Daylight map distribution, data updates supporting this layer are no longer available. OpenStreetMap is an open collaborative project to create a free editable map of the world. Volunteers gather location data using GPS, local knowledge, and other free sources of information and upload it. The resulting free map can be viewed and downloaded from the OpenStreetMap site: www.OpenStreetMap.org. Esri is a supporter of the OSM project.  Precise Tile Registration: The tile layer uses the improved tiling scheme “WGS84 Geographic, Version 2” to ensure proper tile positioning at higher resolutions (neighborhood level and beyond). The new tiling scheme is much more precise than tiling schemes of the legacy basemaps Esri released years ago. We recommend that you start using this new basemap for any new web maps in WGS84 that you plan to author.   Due to the number of differences between the old and new tiling schemes, some web clients will not be able to overlay tile layers in the old and new tiling schemes in one web map.

World Hillshade

This layer portrays elevation as an artistic hillshade. The map is designed to be used as a backdrop for topographical, soil, hydro, landcover or other outdoor recreational maps. It’s a default relief background in various basemaps such as Topographic, Terrain with Labels. The map is compiled from a variety of data sources from commercial, community maps and many authoritative organizations across the globe. The basemap has global coverage down to a scale of ~1:72k. In the United States, parts of Europe, Asia and Africa coverage goes down to ~1:9k.  To see the coverage and sources of various datasets comprising this map layer, view the World Elevation Coverage Map. Additionally, this layer uses data from Vantor’s Precision 3D Digital Terrain Models for parts of the globe. The map is based on the Multi-directional hillshade algorithm.
