✦ Suggested by OrionAIThis dataset comprises electrofishing survey data collected from 2021 onward to support the National Brown Trout Programme (NBTP) within the IFI Research Division. Surveys were conducted using standardised electrofishing methods to assess brown trout populations at selected sites. The purpose of this dataset is to support long-term monitoring, inform trout conservation efforts and contribute to national fisheries management strategies. REST (JSON)
Geographical start point for the river network analysis. Identifies the freshwater starting point which extends up to the limit of anadromy (barrier or confluence with 1st Order stream). The rivers dataset, 2026 edition, is derived from HydroRIVERS line layers, which represent a subset of the HydroSHEDS database based on the 15 arc-second Digital Elevation Model (DEM) from NASA's Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM). The HydroRIVERS source data, developed on behalf of World Wildlife Fund US (WWF), Washington, DC, USA, in collaboration with McGill University, Montreal, Canada, represents a vectorized line network of all global rivers that have a catchment area of at least 10 km² or an average river flow of at least 0.1 m³/sec, or both. More information at https://www.hydrosheds.org/products/hydrorivers The present dataset additionally incorporates a perennial/intermittent flow-regime classification (from 1 to 6) derived from HydroATLAS indicators and applied to the HydroRIVERS network. The classification distinguishes perennial and intermittent rivers reaches using climatic (Upstream aridity index: ari_ix_uav), hydrological (Minimum monthly discharge: dis_m3_pmn), and topological (Stream flow order: ORD_FLOW) indicators and has been further refined through network-topology smoothing to improve spatial consistency. Other key attributes include: - HYRIV_ID: unique identifier for each river reach; - NEXT_DOWN: identifier of the next downstream reach, supporting network connectivity analyses; - ORD_FLOW: river flow order based on discharge classes; - LENGTH_KM: reach length (km); - DIST_UP_KM and DIST_DN_KM: distance to source and outlet, respectively; - UPLAND_SKM: total upstream drainage area (km²); - CATCH_SKM: local catchment area (km²); - DIS_AV_CMS: long-term average discharge (m³/s). **Data publication:** 2026-06-15 **Supplemental Information:** This dataset is developed as part of a GIS-based information system on water resources. It has been published in the framework of the AQUASTAT - programme of the Land and Water Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. **Contact points:** Resource Contact: [Jippe Hoogeveen](mailto:jippe.hoogeveen@fao.org) Resource Contact: [Livia Peiser](mailto:livia.peiser@fao.org) Metadata Contact: [AQUASTAT](mailto:aquastat@fao.org) **Data lineage:** For further technical details on data lineage, please refer to the HydRiver Classification report **Resource constraints:** This work is made available under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC-BY-4.0) **Online resources:** HydRiver_Phase4_Technical_Report
The rivers of Europe dataset is derived from the World Wildlife Fund's (WWF) HydroSHEDS drainage direction layer and a stream network layer. The source of the drainage direction layer was the 15-second Digital Elevation Model (DEM) from NASA's Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM). The raster stream network was determined by using the HydroSHEDS flow accumulation grid, with a threshold of about 1000 km² upstream area. The stream network dataset consists of the following information: the origin node of each arc in the network (FROM_NODE), the destination of each arc in the network (TO_NODE), the Strahler stream order of each arc in the network (STRAHLER), numerical code and name of the major basin that the arc falls within (MAJ_BAS and MAJ_NAME); - area of the major basin in square km that the arc falls within (MAJ_AREA); - numerical code and name of the sub-basin that the arc falls within (SUB_BAS and SUB_NAME); - area of the sub-basin in square km that the arc falls within (SUB_AREA); - numerical code of the sub-basin towards which the sub-basin flows that the arc falls within (TO_SUBBAS) (the codes -888 and -999 have been assigned respectively to internal sub-basins and to sub-basins draining into the sea). The attributes table now includes a field named "Regime" with tentative classification of perennial ("P") and intermittent ("I") streams. **Data revision:** 2014-03-05 **Supplemental Information:** This dataset is developed as part of a GIS-based information system on water resources for the European continent. It has been published in the framework of the AQUASTAT - programme of the Land and Water Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. **Contact points:** Resource Contact: [Jippe Hoogeveen](mailto:Jippe.Hoogeveen@fao.org) Resource Contact: [Livia Peiser](mailto:Livia.Peiser@fao.org) Metadata Contact: [AQUASTAT](mailto:aquastat@fao.org) **Data lineage:** The linework of the map was obtained by converting the stream network to a feature dataset with the Hydrology toolset in ESRI ArcGIS.The Flow Direction and Stream Order grids were derived from hydrologically corrected elevation data with a resolution of 15 arc-seconds.The elevation dataset was part of a mapping product, HydroSHEDS, developed by the Conservation Science Program of World Wildlife Fund.Original input data had been obtained during NASA's Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM). **Resource constraints:** This work is made available under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC-BY-4.0) **Online resources:** Download - Rivers of Europe (ESRI shapefile) Technical information on the data source More updated information on HydroSHEDS 2025
The hydromorphological status was determined by a monitoring compliant with the Water Framework Directive (Directive 2000/60/EU). The elaboration of a structural quality mapping is one part of this monitoring. Within the scope of the work on the structural quality mapping, a total of 31 parameters in the area of the river bed, the river bank and the floodplain are assessed so that the structural quality mapping contains detailed information on the river morphology and the river continuity. In this case, the evaluation of the mapped sections is based on seven classes. The results of the evaluation were aggregated into an overall evaluation per mapped section.
