About this dataset

**UNOSAT code: LS20240525PNG, GDACS ID: 1102646** This map illustrates the extent of satellite-detected landslide scars and related damage in the Lagaip/Pogera District of Enga Province in Papua New Guinea, using GeoEye-1 satellite imagery acquired on May 27, 2024, at 10:42 LT, 2 km west of Mulitaka. A massive landslide and rockfalls have affected the area. Within a 2 km radius, 634 pre-event structures have been identified (OpenStreetMap), of which at least 18 structures have been identified as damaged and/or destroyed. Using WorldPop spatial demographic datasets, it is estimated that at least 2,000 people live within a 2 km radius of the main damaged road. The main landslide scar covers approximately 9 hectares and has also blocked the Laiagam-Porgera road. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to the United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT).

Documentation

UNOSAT datasets and maps are produced using a variety of methods. In general, analysts closely review satellite imagery, often comparing two or more images together, and determine notable changes between the images. For damage assessments, refugee or IDP assessments, and similar analyses, these changes are then manually documented in the vector data by the analyst. For flood extractions, landcover mapping and similar analyses, a variety of automated remote sensing techniques are used to extract the relevant information which is then reviewed and revised as necessary by the analyst. In all cases, resulting data is then loaded into a standardized UNOSAT geodatabase and exported asshapefiles for dissemination. This is a preliminary assessment and has not yet been validated in the field. It is important to consider the characteristics of the source imagery used in the analyses when interpreting results. For damage assessments it should be noted that only significant damage to the structural integrity of the buildings analyzed can be seen in imagery, while minor damage such as cracks or holes may not be visible at all. For flood extractions using radar data it is important to note that urban areas and highly vegetated areas may mask the flood signature and result in underestimation of flood waters. Lava flow extent and affected structures caused by the 22 May 2021 Nyiragongo volcanic eruption in Goma, DR Congo

**UNOSAT code: VO20210523COD** This map illustrates potentially affected structures and buildings in Nyiragongo district, Nord-Kivu province, DR Congo as detected by satellite image acquired after the 22 May 2021 Nyiragongo volcanic eruption. UNITAR-UNOSAT analysis used a Sentinel-1 image acquired on 25 May 2021, at 16:21 UTC, to extract the lava flow extent. Within the map extent, about 1,722 structures and the road about 18 km are potentially affected by the lava flow. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field.
