About this dataset

**UNOSAT code: AC20210705THA** This map illustrates the damage assessment after the blast of the 5th July 2021 in Bang Phli Yai sub-district, Bang Phli district, Samut Prakan province, Thailand. UNITAR - UNOSAT identified 328 potentially damaged structures of which 13 are destroyed and 315 are severely or moderately damaged. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT).

Documentation

UNOSAT datasets and maps are produced using a variety of methods. In general, analysts closely review satellite imagery, often comparing two or more images together, and determine notable changes between the images. For damage assessments, refugee or IDP assessments, and similar analyses, these changes are then manually documented in the vector data by the analyst. For flood extractions, landcover mapping and similar analyses, a variety of automated remote sensing techniques are used to extract the relevant information which is then reviewed and revised as necessary by the analyst. In all cases, resulting data is then loaded into a standardized UNOSAT geodatabase and exported asshapefiles for dissemination. This is a preliminary assessment and has not yet been validated in the field. It is important to consider the characteristics of the source imagery used in the analyses when interpreting results. For damage assessments it should be noted that only significant damage to the structural integrity of the buildings analyzed can be seen in imagery, while minor damage such as cracks or holes may not be visible at all. For flood extractions using radar data it is important to note that urban areas and highly vegetated areas may mask the flood signature and result in underestimation of flood waters. Damage Assessment in Kutupalong Refugee Camp, Palong Khali Union, Bangladesh

This map illustrates satellite-detected possible damaged shelter structures in Kutupalong Refugee Camp, Palong Khali Union and Cox Bazar District, Chittagong Division, Bangladesh. The UNITAR-UNOSAT analysis used Pleiades satellite imagery acquired the 6th and the 7th June 2017 as post-images. The UNITAR-UNOSAT analysis identified 1,105 possible damaged shelter structures within the extent of the camp. Kindly note that the number of possible shelter damaged structures could have been under or overestimated in some areas due to the cloud cover and the delimitation of the camp extent. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to UNITAR – UNOSAT.

Damage assessment in Nomuka village, Mu'omu'a district, Ha'apai division, Nomuka Island, as of 17 January 2022

**UNOSAT code: VO20220115TON** This map illustrates effects of the Hunga Tonga-hunga Ha'apai volcanic eruption in Nomuka island (Mu'omu'a district, Tonga) and damage assessment as detected from a Pleiades image acquired on 17 January 2022, 10:53 local time. In this island we identified~250 structures. 104 structures were analyzed in the cloud-free area and 41 structures were identified as damaged and almost all the structures were covered with ash. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to UNITAR-UNOSAT.

Damage Assessment: Neighborhoods in Western Benghazi City, Libya

This map illustrates satellite-detected areas of damage in the Al Thama, Al Sabri, Old Benghazi, Al Salmane Al Sharge, and Al Salmane Al Garbe neighborhoods of Benghazi City, Libya. Using satellite imagery acquired 04 and 19 April 2016 as well as 01 August 2015, UNITAR-UNOSAT identified a total of 1,184 potentially damaged structures in these neighborhoods. Approximately 75 of these were destroyed, 198 severely damaged, 426 moderately damaged, and 485 possibly damaged. A slightly higher margin of error is possible in this analysis due to utilization of multiple images and the uncontrolled nature of construction in Benghazi during the analysis timeframe. This is a preliminary analysis & has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to UNITAR-UNOSAT.

Destroyed buildings in Maungdaw District, Myanmar

This map illustrates satellite-detected destroyed or otherwise damaged structures in Maungdaw and Buthindaung townships, Maungdaw District, Myanmar, as seen in satellite imagery collected on 16 September 2017. The analysis found a total area of more than 20 square kilometers of destroyed structures within the 2,000 square kilometers analyzed. According to other data on town locations it is likely that more than 160 towns are affected within the area analyzed. Additionally, 144 fires were detected within the area between 25 August and 21 September 2017 by the MODIS and VIIRS sensors, with recent fire detections indicating destruction is likely ongoing. Most of the detected fires are located in the proximity of the affected areas as observed in the imagery collected 16 September. Finally, heavy cloud cover during the period in question, and on 16 September especially, indicates that destruction and fire detections are likely underestimated in this analysis. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to UNITAR - UNOSAT.

Damage Assessment & Related Density in the Southeastern Part of Dominica

This map illustrates potentially damaged structures and buildings in the southeastern part of Dominica (St. Patrick & St. David Parishes) as detected by satellite image acquired after landfall of the Tropical Cyclone Maria-17 on 19 September 2017. The UNITAR-UNOSAT analysis combined with Copernicus analysis, identified 1304 potentially damaged structures within the extent of this map. Taking into account the pre-building footprints provided by Humanitarian OpenStreetMap, this represents about 56 % of the total number of structures within the analysed cloud free areas. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to UNITAR-UNOSAT.
