The Cooperative Open Online Landslide Repository (COOLR) contains citizen science data from Landslide Reporter Catalog (LRC), data from NASA’s Global Landslide Catalog (GLC), NASA manually or automatically digitized landslides, and other inventories contributed by the research community. These are sorted into two main layers, "coolr_reports" and "coolr_events". The layers are further differentiated into a point or polygon layer, named accordingly. Within these layers, the user can further query out the manual or automated landslide inventories, events of a certain date, event triggers, and more. Each feature has a “title” in the attribute table with the digitization method, location, and event date (written as YYYY-MM-DD). The citation for each event inventory is located within the attribute table field “citation”. See the methods section for further detail about manual vs automatic landslide detection. For more information about the fields, see the How-to-Guide documentation under the “Trainings” tab at https://landslides.nasa.gov and the publications below. The citation for each event inventory is located within the attribute table field “citation”. If you utilize this inventory, please reference each citation of the event(s) used. For example, if you use the entire inventory layer, please reference all the event citations contained within the layer. If you use just the events past a certain date, or another subset of the layer, please query those citations out and reference those. In addition, a CSV containing all citations can be found on the download page: https://maps.nccs.nasa.gov/arcgis/apps/MapAndAppGallery/index.html?appid=574f26408683485799d02e857e5d9521. Methods We use 'landslide' as a general term to represent all event types. The catalog differentiates between landslide types when the information is available in the ls_type field. Manually digitized landslides (method = Manual): These are hand-digitized landslide points or polygons, created by NASA scientists or contributed by other institutions. They are created on a case-by-case basis, depending on time and resources, or if there is an event where a partner requests it. The ability to hand-digitize depends on the availability of high-resolution cloud-free imagery, ideally before and after the event. Depending on the event size, location, and the satellite overpass, imagery from multiple dates may be used. For points, the scientist tries to identify where the initiation zone of each landslide is using an elevation layer. For polygons, the initiation zone is not differentiated. Automatically digitized landslides (method = Automatic): The open-source Semi-Automatic Landslide Detection (SaLaD) system was created to rapidly map landslides. SALaD uses object-based image analysis and machine learning to detect landslides from optical imagery. To successfully detect landslides, cloud-free imagery from before and after an event is needed, in addition to training data from that region or a region nearby. The raw polygon output of this system can be useful for situational awareness, but it will require manual corrections to weed out false positives for other use cases. Once that is done, initiation points can be created using a DEM. For Further Reference Landslides.nasa.gov Amatya, P., Kirschbaum, D., Stanley, T., and Tanyas, H. (2021). ASTER band ratio data for Northeast Greenland

The ASTER Level 1 Precision Terrain Corrected Registered At-Sensor Radiance (AST_L1T) data are obtained from the USGS webpage https://earthexplorer.usgs.gov/ in the time period of 2000-2007. Scenes were also limited to summer and captured in daytime. Preprocessing of the Aster scenes encompasses atmospheric, radiometric and topographic corrections before masking non-outcrop pixels and generating the final mosaic. The calibrated radiance data is converted to apparent surface reflectance using a radiative transfer program, Atmospheric and Topographic Correction (ATCOR-3), in rugged terrain mode. The ATCOR rugged terrain mode utilizes a surface elevation model to adjust illumination levels. Calibration and adjusting the apparent surface reflectance values from the ATCOR-3 processing was not feasible due to lack of ground-based reflectance measurements.

Landslide Susceptibility

The landslide susceptibility map for current climate conditions highlights regions vulnerable to landslides caused by earthquakes or precipitation. This map was derived by combining the two susceptibility layers described below: for each cell, the highest value between the two was selected. Classes 2 and 3 are categorized as "Moderate", and classes 4 and 5 as "High". Class 1 denotes no susceptibility and is not shown. 1) The earthquake-induced landslide susceptibility map indicates the areas of the world that are more prone to landslides triggered by earthquakes. The landslide susceptibility is based on the model developed by NGI (Nadim et al., 2006, 2013; Jaedicke et al., 2013) but with improvements and refinements. The earthquake-induced landslides susceptibility map classifies the terrain into five susceptibility classes by combining slope, vegetation, lithology, and soil moisture information from global datasets. The weights of different susceptibility factors were calibrated to the information available in landslide inventories and physical processes. 2) The precipitation-induced landslide susceptibility map for the existing climate indicates the areas of the world that are more prone to landslides in the current climate conditions. The landslide susceptibility is based on the model developed by NGI (Nadim et al., 2006, 2013; Jaedicke et al., 2013) but with improvements and refinements. The precipitation-induced landslides susceptibility map for the current climate classifies the terrain into five susceptibility classes by combining slope, vegetation, lithology, and antecedent rainfall information from global datasets. Antecedent rainfall information has been obtained from the W5E5 dataset for the period 1979-2016. The weights of different susceptibility factors were calibrated to the information available in landslide inventories and physical processes. Note: This layer represents landslide susceptibility and not landslide hazard. It does not incorporate triggering factors (e.g., earthquake ground motion or rainfall intensity/return periods). Hazard can only be derived by combining susceptibility with a defined trigger scenario. The map has a resolution of 3 arc-sec. (~93 meters at the equator; east–west distance decreases with latitude). (EXERCISE - JAHAAX May 2026) ARIA Line of Sight Surface Displacement Maps (Copernicus Sentinel-1) for the Bent Goal Earthquake May 2026

NOTE: this is exercise data and not representative of real events. The original data is from the earthquake in Turkey February 2023. Date of Image: 5/21/2026 Summary: Scientists working with Advanced Rapid Imaging and Analysis (ARIA) team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and California Institute of Technology, both in Pasadena, California, created this displacement map with measurements of the surface displacements, in the radar line-of-sight, caused by the major earthquake in Turkiye. NOTE: The line-of-sight displacement (LOS) measurement is relative, and the dataset has not been calibrated to any ground location so there is a bias of the reference level, which is unknown. This data has not yet been validated. This displacement map should be used as guidance to identify areas of significant ground displacement, and may be less reliable over snow-covered and vegetated areas. SENTINEL-1: The map was derived from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images from the Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellites, operated by the European Space Agency (ESA). The team computed the interferometric difference (interferogram or interferometric SAR) between the post-event and pre-event images on the Sentinel-1 ascending (satellite moving north) track 14. The interferometric SAR (InSAR) measures the component of surface displacement in the line-of-sight (LOS) between the ground and the satellite, which is at an angle of about 40 degrees from the vertical and slightly south of due west. Suggested Use: Unwrapped Interferogram (WRP): Phase map showing relative ground deformation where each "fringe" or concentric pattern indicates a 20 cm of displacement along the line-of-sight of the satellite (LOS). The color pattern from the inside to the outside of fringe indicates the direction of the ground movement. If the ground move towards the satellite, the color variation goes from ROYGB (Red->Orange->Yellow->Green->Blue), whereas, BGYOR (Blue->Green->Yellow->Orange->Red) represents ground movement away from the satellite. The dataset has not been calibrated to any ground location so there is a bias of the reference level, which is unknown. This data has not yet been validated. This displacement map should be used as guidance to identify areas of significant ground displacement, and may be less reliable over snow-covered and vegetated areas. Across Track Displacement (RNG): Red colors indicate increasing displacement towards the West, while the Blue areas indicate increasing displacement towards the East Along Track Displacement (AZI): Red colors indicate increasing displacement towards the West, while the Blue areas indicate increasing displacement towards the East NOTE: Small vertical displacements have also occurred, but the primary surface displacements were in the horizontal plane. More information about the dataset is available here: https://asf.alaska.edu/datasets/derived/global-seasonal-sentinel-1-interferometric-coherence-and-backscatter-dataset/ To learn more about the GSSICB image services and access web maps, refer to ASF's GSSICB StoryMap Tutorial. -------- Time Interval: SeasonalTime Extent: Sep 2020 to Nov 2020Time Standard: Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)Grid Size: 3 arcsecond pixel spacingProjection: WGS84Extent: Global Source:Alaska Satellite Facility (ASF) Data Sources: https://doi.org/10.5067/8W33RRS6S2RV Data Parameters: GSSICB_Median_12_day_HH_Coherence_Sep_Oct_Nov_Scaled: Global fall (September/October/November) median 12-day interferometric coherence (COH12) in HH polarization from the Global Seasonal Sentinel-1 Interferometric Coherence and Backscatter Data Set. The source rasters have been scaled to an integer (values ranging from 0 to 100) by multiplying the coherence values by 100. GSSICB_Median_12_day_HH_Coherence_Sep_Oct_Nov_Unscaled: Global fall (September/October/November) median 12-day interferometric coherence (COH12) in HH polarization from the Global Seasonal Sentinel-1 Interferometric Coherence and Backscatter Data Set. The default raster function template for this image service converts the scaled source raster values to the normal range of coherence values (0 to 1) by dividing the pixel values of the source rasters by 100. -------- For questions or issues please email: uso@asf.alaska.edu
