About this dataset

**UNOSAT code: FL20240512AFG, GDACS ID: 1102616** This map illustrates satellite-detected mudflow extent in Burka District, Baghlan Province, Afghanistan as observed from a Pléiades image acquired on 14 May 2024 at 10:48 local time. Within the analysed area of about 130 km², a total of about 18 km² of lands appear to be affected by mudflow. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to the United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT).

Documentation

UNOSAT datasets and maps are produced using a variety of methods. In general, analysts closely review satellite imagery, often comparing two or more images together, and determine notable changes between the images. For damage assessments, refugee or IDP assessments, and similar analyses, these changes are then manually documented in the vector data by the analyst. For flood extractions, landcover mapping and similar analyses, a variety of automated remote sensing techniques are used to extract the relevant information which is then reviewed and revised as necessary by the analyst. In all cases, resulting data is then loaded into a standardized UNOSAT geodatabase and exported asshapefiles for dissemination. This is a preliminary assessment and has not yet been validated in the field. It is important to consider the characteristics of the source imagery used in the analyses when interpreting results. For damage assessments it should be noted that only significant damage to the structural integrity of the buildings analyzed can be seen in imagery, while minor damage such as cracks or holes may not be visible at all. For flood extractions using radar data it is important to note that urban areas and highly vegetated areas may mask the flood signature and result in underestimation of flood waters. Colombia - Potentially Affected Zones by the Mudflow in Mocoa

This map illustrates areas potentially affected by the mudflow, extracted from a Pleiades and GeoEye-1 satellite images acquired on the 10 April 2017 over Mocoa city and its outskirts, in Putumayo Department, Colombia. Inside some neighbourhoods of the city of Mocoa, flood waters and mudflow have receded compared with previous analysis performed by UNOSAT using an image from 4 April 2017. The situation as of 10 April 2017 reveals: 22 km of roads seem potentially affected and about 1,300 buildings are within areas which are still experiencing floods and mud flow. It is likely that flood waters and mudflow could have been systematically under or overestimated along highly vegetated areas and within built-up urban areas. This analysis has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to UNITAR-UNOSAT.
