Overview Aerosol Optical Depth at 550 nanometers (AOD550; Remer et al. 2019) from the NASA Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) Ocean Color Instrument (OCI). AOD550 is an indicator of aerosol loading, with its value proportional to the concentration of aerosol in a cloud-free vertical column of the atmosphere. The data layer is provided as global, 8-day averages mapped to a standard, equal-angle, latitude-longitude grid of 0.1 degree, which equates to approximately 11 kilometers (km) at the equator. Pixels with no data values represent data set to null due to the presence of cloud cover or values outside of quality control thresholds. Data Layer Summary Name, units Aerosol Optical Depth at 550 nm (AOD550) Dimensionless quantity quantifying the extinction of light at 550 nm by aerosols, which is proportional to the amount of aerosol in the vertical column. Spatial resolution 0.1 degree Level-3, mapped to standard grid; global coverage Time Resolution 8 day average Each pixel represents an average of the valid, daily values observed within that grid element during the 8-day interval (approx 1 week). Note: 8 day average data layer is calculated from daily, "refined" (archive-quality) Level 3 PACE AOD550 products available at this link from NASA Earthdata in NetCDF format. Each NetCDF file includes 18 atmospheric products output by a common algorithm, including spectral AOD at 550 nm and several other wavelengths. Earthdata account required to download. Data Version Version 3.1 Data versions change as improved calibration, validation, algorithm refinements, etc are applied over time. See Version 3.1 Release Notes for details. Latency ~1 month This imagery service provides “refined” (archive-quality) PACE data products from March 2024-present, which have an approx 1 month latency. Note: Daily, “near real time (NRT)” Level 3 PACE AOD550 products with less than approximately 24-48 hour latency available at this link from NASA Earthdata in NetCDF format. Each NetCDF file includes 18 data products output by a common algorithm, including spectral AOD at 550 nm and several other wavelengths. Earthdata account required to download. Intended Use: What can I do with this layer? AOD550 is used to monitor distributions of aerosols and how they change over space and time. For example, AOD550 is useful for identifying and tracking areas of high particulate concentrations of smoke and dust that correspond to air quality events, such as wildfires and dust storms. The time (8 day average) and space (0.1 degree) resolution of this data layer enables weekly to seasonal and annual insight at regional to global scales. Limitations of Use: What should I know about the data? Data Status (Maturity): This product is provisional, which means that product results have been reviewed and are in family with heritage data products or other basis of expectation, but have not yet been extensively validated and so may still contain significant errors. Data layer is sufficient for qualitative determinations of product fitness-for-purpose, for testing by operational users, and may be suitable for scientific publication. Mission and Product Background PACE Mission Overview: Launched in February 2024, NASA’s Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) observatory uniquely provides near-daily, hyperspectral coverage of Earth’s surface, plus hyperspectral and hyperangular polarimetry. PACE is a comprehensive Earth System mission, delivering all new, space-based information on the health and diversity of aquatic and terrestrial life (algae, plants), aerosol properties & modes (e.g. smoke, dust), cloud types, and more. The Ocean Color Instrument (OCI), PACE's primary sensor, is a hyperspectral (5 nm resolution) imaging spectrometer that measures properties of light from the ultraviolet (UV, 340 nm) through visible and near infrared (NIR, 895 nm) portions of the electromagnetic spectrum in 1.25 to 2.5 nm steps, plus 7 shortwave infrared (SWIR) bands (Werdell et al. 2019). Observations from OCI are moderate spatial resolution (1.2 km2), enabling a relatively frequent revisit time of 1-2 days. This combination of continuous, global coverage and spectral capabilities is unmatched by any other satellite platform, public or private. PACE benefits society by expanding our foundational knowledge of Earth and enabling novel, space-based science and applications tools across water resources (e.g. fisheries), air quality, land monitoring & management, and more. Aerosol Products from PACE OCI For the first time, and with important implications for monitoring aerosols from space, OCI is enabling global measurement of reflected sunlight from the Earth across a broad spectrum from the ultraviolet (UV: 350 nm) to the short-wave infrared (SWIR: 2260 nm) from a single instrument at up to a 1.2 km2 spatial resolution. Seven discrete bands cover SWIR wavelengths, and the spectrum from 350 to 890 nm is continuously covered with a 5 nm bandwidth at 2.5 nm steps. OCI combines in a single instrument (and at an enhanced spatial resolution for the UV) the heritage capabilities of the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), while also covering the oxygen A and B bands. OCI is similar to merging MODIS and OMI into a single instrument, co-registered and with common calibration and a common moderate spatial resolution. Note that OMI’s spatial footprint is 13 × 24 km whereas OCI’s is 1.2 km (both at the sub-satellite point). The spectral capabilities of OCI enable both the development of new aerosol characterization approaches from space as well as continuation of heritage satellite aerosol products (Remer et al. 2019). AOD550 data provided here is one of a suite of measurements output by the Unified Aerosol Algorithm (Remer et al., in prep) using OCI’s broad range of spectral measurements. PACE UAA output includes spectral AOD at 354, 388, 480, 550, and 670 nm over land and water (and additionally at 870, 1240, 1640, and 2220 nm over water), as well as the fine mode fraction of AOD at 550 nm over water. For conditions of moderate or high aerosol loading, it additionally provides estimates of aerosol single scattering albedo and average height. These capabilities are achieved via a combination of NASA heritage Dark Target, Deep Blue, and OMI UV approaches. What other PACE data layers are available?
