2022 Intermediate Zone Boundaries

Intermediate zones are a statistical geography that sit between data zones and local authorities, created for use with the Scottish Neighbourhood Statistics (SNS) programme (now known as statistics.gov.scot) and the wider public sector. Intermediate zones are used for the dissemination of statistics that are not suitable for release at the data zone level because of the sensitive nature of the statistic, or for reasons of reliability. Intermediate Zones were designed to meet constraints on population thresholds (2,500 - 6,000 household residents), to nest within local authorities (at the time of the Census), and to be built up from aggregates of data zones. Intermediate zones represent a relatively stable geography that can be used to analyse change over time, with changes only occurring after a Census. This dataset represents the intermediate zones that were created following the 2022 Census, with 1,334 intermediate zones covering the whole of Scotland.

Land Capability for Agriculture - Prime Land

This dataset provides a digital boundary for Prime Agricultural Land (otherwise termed "best and most versatile") in Scotland based on an amalgamation of classes 1, 2 and 3.1 of the Land Capability for Agriculture (LCA) maps. The LCA classification is used to rank land on the basis of its potential productivity and cropping flexibility. This is determined by the extent to which the physical characteristics of the land (soil, climate and relief) impose long term restrictions on its use. The source LCA maps are available from the James Hutton Institute at both 1:250,000 (national coverage) and 1:50,000 (partial coverage) scales. This LCA Prime Land boundary has been produced from a hybrid version of the LCA classification which combines the 1:250,000 and 1:50,000 scale datasets. The hybrid dataset uses the more detailed 1:50,000 scale data where it exists in preference to the 1:250,000 scale data as it is seen as the definitive mapped assessment. The majority of prime land boundary is sourced from the 1:50,000 scale mapping, with that sourced from the 1:250,000 map limited to north-west of Montrose, Machrihanish, a small area adjacent to the Black Isle, west of Campbeltown and south of Jedburgh. This prime land dataset should be used in favour of previous versions which only referenced the 1:250,000 scale mapping. The LCA Prime Land boundary supports planners and agricultural officers in assessing cases made for development and determining priorities in relation to retaining areas of high quality agricultural land, i.e. that with a high capacity to produce food.

Urban Rural Classification - Scotland

The Scottish Government's Urban Rural Classification provides a consistent way of defining urban and rural areas across Scotland. The classification is used to support policy development and the understanding of issues facing urban, rural and remote communities. It is based upon two main criteria: (i) population as defined by National Records of Scotland (NRS), and (ii) accessibility based on drive time analysis to differentiate between accessible and remote areas in Scotland. The classification can be analysed in a two, three, six or eight fold form. The two-fold classification simply distinguishes between urban and rural areas through two categories, urban and rural, while the three-fold classification splits the rural category between accessible and remote. Most commonly used is the 6-fold classification which distinguishes between urban, rural, and remote areas through six categories. The 8-fold classification further distinguishes between remote and very remote regions. The Classification is normally updated on a biennial basis, with the current dataset reflective of the year 2022. Data for previous versions are available for download in ESRI Shapefile format.

Risk of Flooding from Rivers and the Sea

Defra Network WMS server provided by the Environment Agency. "Risk of Flooding from Rivers and the Sea (RoFRS) shows the chance of flooding from rivers and the sea taking into account the presence and condition of flood defences. It is our main way of communicating flood risk from rivers and sea to the public through our ‘Check Your Long Term Flood Risk’ service on gov.uk. While flood defences reduce the level of risk they do not completely remove it. For example, water can flow over the top of the defence, or they can fail in extreme weather conditions or if they are in poor condition. As a result, the RoFRS maps may show that there is risk to areas behind some flood defences. RoFRS is a probabilistic product, meaning that it shows the overall risk, rather than the risk associated with a specific event or scenario. This risk is displayed as one of four likelihood bandings: High - greater than or equal to 1 in 30 (3.3%) chance of flooding in any year  Medium – Less than 1 in 30 (3.3%) but greater than or equal to 1 in 100 (1%) chance of flooding in any given year  Low – Less than 1 in 100 (1%) but greater than or equal to 1 in 1000 (0.1%) chance of flooding in any given year  Very low – less than 1 in 1000 (0.1%) chance of flooding in any given year NB. This is a complex dataset, with preview available only on certain zoom levels. The Web Mapping service has been set to 1:50 000 in the attribute. The services are set to be visible from the 1:50 000 scale range. There may be some variation, since end client software may interpret the request differently.  RoFRS is created using a combination of local flood model information and national flood modelling. These are used to generate the probabilities of flood risk for each 2m grid square of land, with the aim of using the best available flood risk information in any one location. For particular areas, sections of a previous (50m resolution) RoFRS dataset have been retained and used. These are due to be replaced with new data in the future." - Defra Data Services Platform

Planning Application Polygons

Location of planning applications in Nottingham City with information about application dates, proposals, and decisions. This data contains planning applications from the previous 10 years to the present date. This data shows the approximate extent of planning and other applications processed by the council and should be used alongside the Planning Applications Points dataset, as not every planning application is represented by a polygon. The dataset does not form part of the statutory register of applications, is not guaranteed to be complete and application extents may differ from actual application site boundaries. The plotted areas do not relate to land ownership and should not be used in boundary disputes. For actual site boundaries please refer to the relevant application plans at www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/planningapplications If you're interested in a single planning application, you do not need to download this. Instead, search on Nottingham City Council's public access planning website. The 'CaseURL' field in the ncc_PlanningAplications.csv file contains a link to Nottingham City Council's planning applications public access pages where further information about each application (including a map) can be found. The URL field does not contain a value where: the application has been received but not yet validated, or where the application has been returned, or where the application has been withdrawn, or where the application was invalid on receipt, or where there was insufficient fee, or where no application was required.

2022 Data Zone Boundaries

Data Zones are the key geography for the dissemination of small area statistics in Scotland and are widely used across the public sector. Composed of groups of Census Output Areas, Data Zones are large enough that statistics can be presented accurately without fear of disclosure and yet small enough that they can be used to represent communities. They are designed to have roughly standard populations of 500 to 1,000 household residents, nest within local authorities (at the time of the Census), and have compact shapes that respect physical boundaries where possible. When Data Zones were originally created for the 2001 Census, they were designed to contain households with similar social characteristics. Aggregations of Data Zones can be used to provide estimates for higher level geographies where official statistics might not otherwise be available. Data Zones also represent a relatively stable geography that can be used to analyse change over time, with changes only occurring after a Census. Following the update to Data Zones using 2022 Census data, there are now 7,392 Data Zones covering the whole of Scotland.

Environmentally Sensitive Areas - Scotland

Environmentally Sensitive Areas (ESAs) were identified as areas of the countryside where the landscape, wildlife or historic interest is of national importance and where these environmental features can be affected by farming operations. Features such as hedges, walls, ditches, field barns, hay meadows, heather moorland and river valley grasslands have been created by traditional farming methods over hundreds of years and are highly valued, both for their scenic beauty and for the habitats they provide for plants and wildlife. The ESA Scheme was designed to promote agriculture practices which have helped create these distinctive landscapes and have contributed to the maintenance of wildlife habitats or historic features. Introduced in 1987, the scheme formed part of the Scottish Agri-Environment Programme which was required to meet UK Government obligations under the Common Agriculture Policy (CAP). The scheme allowed farmers and crofters within designated areas to have access to payments to sustain or adopt environmentally-friendly farming practices. Participation by farmers and crofters in the Scheme was voluntary. The scheme is no longer active and has been superseded by the Agri-Environment Climate Scheme (AECS) of the Scottish Rural Development Programme. It should be noted that ESAs are not a national landscape and/or nature conservation designation. ESAs have no planning status and therefore cannot be used as a reason for refusing planning applications.

Recorded Flood Outlines

Defra Network WMS server provided by the Environment Agency. Records began in 1946 when predecessor bodies to the Environment Agency started collecting detailed information about flooding incidents, although we may hold limited details about flooding incidents prior to this date. The absence of coverage by Recorded Flood Outlines for an area does not mean that the area has never flooded, only that we do not currently have records of flooding in this area. It is also possible that the pattern of flooding in this area has changed and that this area would now flood or not flood under different circumstances. The Recorded Flood Outlines take into account the presence of defences, structures, and other infrastructure where they existed at the time of flooding. It includes flood extents that may have been affected by overtopping, breaches or blockages. Any flood extents shown do not necessarily indicate that properties were flooded internally. A companion dataset Historic Flood Map contains a subset of these Recorded Flood Outlines which satisfy a certain criteria. More infromation available on: Defra Data Services Platform
