✦ Suggested by OrionAIThis dataset provides fatal and nonfatal drug overdose statistics for Tempe. Each record represents an aggregated overdose statistic for a specified year, category, and subcategory. Data include overall overdose statistics and available breakdowns by age, sex, race and ethnicity, Zip Code, drugs involved, and other reported characteristics. Fatal overdose data are based on deaths occurring within Maricopa County and are derived from death certificate data. Information about drugs involved in fatal overdoses is supplemented with toxicology data from the Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner (OME). Nonfatal overdose data are derived from hospital discharge records for Maricopa County residents. This dataset is a Tempe-focused subset of overdose data provided by the Maricopa County Department of Public Health and supports public reporting and analysis of overdose trends. Data Scope The dataset contains aggregated fatal and nonfatal overdose statistics relevant to Tempe, with Maricopa County statistics included where available for context or comparison. Data may include overall statistics and breakdowns by demographic characteristics, ZIP Code, drugs involved, and other available categories. Fatal overdose statistics are based on the location of the overdose incident. Nonfatal overdose statistics are based on the patient's residence address. Zip Code Changes Zip Code 85288 was established on July 1, 2022. Maricopa County Department of Public Health re-geocoded historical fatal overdose data to reflect the updated Zip Code boundaries, including the new Zip Code of 85288. Nonfatal overdose data for 2022 were geocoded after the full year of data was finalized. As a result, 2022 data reported for Zip Code 85288 represent the entire calendar year are not limited to nonfatal overdoses occurring after July 1, 2022. Data Use This dataset may be used to examine overdose trends in Tempe, explore available demographic and geographic breakdowns, identify drugs associated with overdose events, and compare selected Tempe statistics with Maricopa County data. The dataset also supports the Tempe Opioid Misuse dashboard and related public reporting. Data Limitations Fatal and nonfatal overdose data are derived from different systems and use different geographic definitions. Fatal overdose data are based on the location of the overdose incident, while nonfatal overdose data are based on patient residence. Rates reported use latest available population estimates as denominators and over time may be adjusted as new population estimates become available. Hospital records used for nonfatal overdoses may not identify the specific drug responsible for an overdose. Hospitalizations and emergency department visits represent only a portion of the overall burden of nonfatal drug overdose. Drugs identified through toxicology testing in fatal overdose cases were not necessarily the cause of death. Drug-related percentages are calculated among OME-investigated fatal overdoses with available toxicology results. Homelessness status at the time of death is collected by the Office of the Medical Examiner and is not available before 2020. Related percentages are calculated among OME-investigated fatal overdoses with available toxicology results. Maricopa County Department of Public Health identifies fatal overdoses using qualifying ICD-10 codes appearing in any cause-of-death field. This approach may differ from methods used by other jurisdictions, so comparisons with other data sources should be made with caution. The Arizona Youth Survey (AYS) is administered every two years to a statewide sample of 8th, 10th, and 12th grade youth under the direction of the Arizona Criminal Justice Commission Statistical Analysis Center. The survey includes questions assessing youth substance use, including fentanyl. This dataset contains selected fentanyl-related survey results for Tempe youth. Each record represents a survey question or response category for a specific grade level and survey year. Key fields include survey question, grade, year, percentage value, and grade. Unless otherwise noted in the Question field, percentage values represent respondents providing an affirmative response to the listed question or statement. Alternative response categories are identified in parentheses, such as (No). This data is sourced from the Arizona Youth Survey and has been prepared by the City of Tempe for use in the Tempe Youth Fentanyl Awareness and Use dashboard and for public data access.
