Ask Map Studio for data, and get the world's open data

23 October 2026The OrionGIS team

The Map Studio assistant now searches every dataset in Orion's Global Data Index, hosted and live from publishers, and puts what you ask for straight onto your map.

The quickest way to start a map in OrionGIS is to ask for it. Type "rivers and lakes in Kenya" or "flood risk around Mombasa" into the Map Studio assistant, and it finds the data, loads it and gets to work.

Until today the assistant looked only in the datasets hosted on Orion. Now it searches the whole Global Data Index: hosted datasets plus open data from publishers around the world, matched by meaning, so a request finds the right data even when the dataset never uses your words.

Open data comes onto your map live from its publisher. Vector data arrives as real features you can query with SQL, style by attribute and run analysis on. Imagery and other rasters draw as tiles. For large datasets the assistant loads just the area you're looking at. Every open-data layer carries its publisher and licence, and the assistant tells you which datasets it used, so you can check the result and credit the source.

Open Map Studio, ask for the data you need, and see what's out there.
