The Orion colour library: about 150 colour scales, chosen by meaning

OrionAI 2.13.0Released 29 October 2026

OrionAI and the Style panel now share one library of about 150 tested colour scales, each tagged with what it suits and checked for colour-blind readers, and OrionAI picks from it by what your values mean.

Changes since 2.12.0.

#New

  • The Orion colour library. About 150 colour scales from ColorBrewer, CARTOColors, cmocean, Fabio Crameri's Scientific Colour Maps and matplotlib, plus six Orion scales in the brand green, navy and gold. Each one is tagged with the kinds of data it suits (population, rainfall, vegetation, temperature, elevation, change, land cover and about 25 more) and measured for steady light-to-dark order, colour-blind readability, greyscale printing and whether it reads best on a light or dark basemap.
  • OrionAI picks colours by meaning from the whole library. It tells the styling step what the values are, for example "rainfall" or "population", and gets the best colour-blind-safe scale for that meaning: the cmocean rain scale for rainfall, Yellow-Orange-Red for population density, Red-Blue for change. It can still use a scale you name, and it can look up other good choices for the same data.
  • One searchable colour picker. The Style panel's colour-scale picker lists the library grouped by kind (low to high, around a midpoint, categories, land and sea, cyclic) with a search box: type "rainfall", "crameri" or "blues". Raster layers get the same library, including scales the image renderer did not have before.

#Improved

  • Exact published colours. Blues, Greens, Oranges, Reds, Purples, Greys, Spectral and the red-yellow scales now use the published ColorBrewer colours, so a classed vector map and a raster in the same scale look the same. Maps you already styled keep their colours until you restyle them.
