Map Studio's OrionAI makes maps, not experiments

OrionAI 2.7.0Released 23 October 2026

OrionAI in Map Studio now adds boundaries for any country at any level, follows a short plan, shows each step in plain words, stops when it should, and uses one credit per request.

Changes since 2.6.1.

#New

  • Administrative boundaries for every country. OrionAI can add boundaries for any country in the world, from the national outline down to the finest level that country publishes: states, provinces, regions or counties, then districts, and further levels where they exist. Each area comes with its name, code and size in km², so OrionAI can map densities and rates straight away. The boundaries come from geoBoundaries (CC BY 4.0), and OrionAI credits them and their original source on the map.

#Improved

  • One credit per request in Map Studio. Each request you send uses one OrionAI credit, however many steps it takes. It used to be one credit per step, so a single map could cost 20 or more.
  • Plain-language steps. While OrionAI works, each step shows as a short line such as "Searched Orion data" or "Styled a layer". Code, queries and technical details no longer appear in the panel.
  • A clear start and finish. OrionAI says what it will do before it starts. It ends with a short answer: what the map shows, the datasets used (with publisher and licence), and next steps.
  • Better maps by default. OrionAI colours areas by rates and densities rather than raw counts, uses five classes, keeps the subject of the map in front, and zooms to the place you asked about.
  • It knows when to stop. A request ends after a set number of steps or after repeated failures. If Orion does not have the data, OrionAI says what is missing and suggests alternatives instead of trying for minutes.

#Fixed

  • Adding some open-data layers made the whole Map Studio workspace fail to load (toolbar, side panels and map). Those layers now load normally.
  • OrionAI no longer asks you to approve code before it continues, and no longer tries to download data from websites.
  • Error messages in Map Studio no longer mention another product's name, and the toolbar no longer shows the map's internal reference.
