OrionAI works out densities, joins, buffers and overlays on your map

OrionAI 2.9.0Released 24 October 2026

OrionAI in Map Studio now has a spatial toolbox. It counts what falls in each area, works out densities and rates, joins data by location or by name, draws buffers, overlays layers and measures distances, all in true metres and km².

Read the announcement: OrionAI now does the analysis, not just the map

Changes since 2.8.0.

#New

  • Spatial toolbox for OrionAI. In Map Studio, OrionAI can now carry out 16 kinds of analysis on the layers in your map: count points in areas (with density per km² and per 1,000 people), measure lines and areas within zones, summarise points on a hexagon grid, join by location, join by a shared name or code, buffer, clip, overlay, erase, merge, turn shapes into points, find the nearest feature and its distance, measure areas and lengths, calculate new fields and filter.
  • True measurements anywhere. Distances are in metres and areas in km², measured on the Earth's surface, so a 5 km buffer is 5 km in Nairobi, Oslo or Santiago.
  • Every result is a layer. Each step adds a new layer named in plain words (for example "Health facilities per km² by county"), which OrionAI then styles. You can save it, style it yourself or publish it, and a published layer records the step and the layers it came from.
  • Clearer steps. Analysis steps show what they did, for example "Counted points in each area" or "Drew buffers around features".

#Improved

  • Density maps finish. Requests such as "health facility density by county in Kenya" now complete with a density map instead of stopping because the counts could not be joined to the boundaries.
  • Honest checks. OrionAI reports when features did not match (for example, names that did not join, or points outside every area), so you can trust or fix the result.
