About this dataset

# EOS-RS Damage Proxy Map: Afghanistan, Earthquake, 22 Mar 2023, v0.4 The Earth Observatory of Singapore - Remote Sensing Lab (EOS-RS) created this preliminary Damage Proxy Map (DPM) depicting areas in Afghanistan where significant changes occurred due to the M6.5 earthquake that occurred on 21 Mar 2023. This map was derived from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images acquired by the Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellite operated by the European Space Agency (ESA) before (22 Nov 2022 to 10 Mar 2023) and after (22 Mar 2023) the event. The image covers an area indicated by the large white polygon. Each pixel measures about 30 meters across. The colour variation from yellow to red indicates increasingly more significant surface change. Preliminary validation was done by comparing with high-resolution optical imagery and media reports. This map could be used as a guidance to identify damaged areas, and may be less reliable over vegetated areas. Scattered pixels over vegetated areas may be false positives, and a lack of colored pixels over vegetated areas may not mean no damage. The product contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data (2022-2023), processed by ESA and analyzed by the Earth Observatory of Singapore - Remote Sensing Lab (EOS-RS) in collaboration with NASA-JPL and Caltech, using the Advanced Rapid Imaging and Analysis (ARIA) system originally developed at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, and modified at EOS-RS. **More map details and files:** **More map details and files:** **Credits:** Earth Observatory of Singapore - Remote Sensing Lab (EOS-RS), Advanced Rapid Imaging and Analysis (ARIA), NASA-JPL/Caltech, Contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data (2022-2023)

Documentation

Change detection on synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite images acquired before and after the event. Damage Proxy Maps show significant changes in radar coherence and amplitude; Flood Proxy Maps show areas that changed to standing water. Maps are preliminary and checked against news reports and ground-level imagery where available. These are preliminary maps derived from satellite radar and should be used as guidance only. Coloured pixels may include false positives, and their absence does not mean an absence of damage or flooding.

7 October 2023 M6.3 Western Afghanistan Herat, Preliminary Satellite-Based Comprehensive Damage Assessment Report

**UNOSAT code: EQ20231008AFG, GDACS ID: 1394952** On the 7th of October 2023, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Herat province in the western part of Afghanistan. The epicentre was located 40 km north-west of Herat City and caused damage and destruction that triggered humanitarian needs for the local populations. The situation worsened when a second and a third strong earthquakes struck the region few days later, respectively on the 11th and 15th of October. The local government reported that the number of deaths was above 2000 people. After the earthquake, UNOSAT quickly estimated that more than a million people were living with the intensity zones above V. It was also estimated that between 150,000 and 230,000 buildings were located within the affected zones. The United Nation Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) reported that the worst affected districts correspond to Herat, Injil and Zindajan district with more than 21,500 destroyed homes. Furthermore in the Herat Province more than 230,000 homes have been impacted by the earthquake and 37,139 families have been left without home living in temporary shelter or open spaces (UNOCHA). At least 40 health facilities were affected during the earthquake, hampering the access to healthcare for an estimated of 580,000 people. One month after the earthquake people displaced from their home still suffer as the winter is approaching and temperatures are dropping (UNHCR).

Damage analysis by settlement and surface displacement of the 7th October 2023 Hirat earthquake

**UNOSAT code EQ20231008AFG, GDACS Id: 1394952** This map illustrates the level of damage induced by the 07 October earthquake (M6.3) in settlements North and North-West Herat as observed from very high-resolution images Pléiades acquired on 09 October 2023. UNOSAT has analysed 4 areas for a total of 750km² and detected 56 affected settlements, amongst which 38 are moderately affected, 3 severely affected and 15 are almost destroyed. The map illustrates also the coseismic surface displacement interferogram related with the 7 October 2023 earthquake as deduced using a pair of SAR images acquired on 07 Oct. 2023 and 25 Sep. 2023. Narrow fringes translate a higher surface displacement. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to the United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT).
