The Sentinel-1 mission is a constellation of two polar-orbiting satellites, operating day and night performing C-band synthetic aperture radar imaging. The Sentinel-1 Radiometrically Terrain Corrected (RTC) data in this collection is a radiometrically terrain corrected product derived from the Ground Range Detected (GRD) Level-1 products produced by the European Space Agency. The RTC processing is performed by Catalyst. Radiometric Terrain Correction accounts for terrain variations that affect both the position of a given point on the Earth's surface and the brightness of the radar return, as expressed in radar geometry. Without treatment, the hill-slope modulations of the radiometry threaten to overwhelm weaker thematic land cover-induced backscatter differences. Additionally, comparison of backscatter from multiple satellites, modes, or tracks loses meaning. A Planetary Computer account is required to retrieve SAS tokens to read the RTC data. See the documentation for more information. ### Methodology The Sentinel-1 GRD product is converted to calibrated intensity using the conversion algorithm described in the ESA technical note ESA-EOPG-CSCOP-TN-0002, Radiometric Calibration of S-1 Level-1 Products Generated by the S-1 IPF. The flat earth calibration values for gamma correction (i.e. perpendicular to the radar line of sight) are extracted from the GRD metadata. The calibration coefficients are applied as a two-dimensional correction in range (by sample number) and azimuth (by time). All available polarizations are calibrated and written as separate layers of a single file. The calibrated SAR output is reprojected to nominal map orientation with north at the top and west to the left. The data is then radiometrically terrain corrected using PlanetDEM as the elevation source. The correction algorithm is nominally based upon D. Small, “Flattening Gamma: Radiometric Terrain Correction for SAR Imagery”, IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Vol 49, No 8., August 2011, pp 3081-3093. For each image scan line, the digital elevation model is interpolated to determine the elevation corresponding to the position associated with the known near slant range distance and arc length for each input pixel. The elevations at the four corners of each pixel are estimated using bilinear resampling. The four elevations are divided into two triangular facets and reprojected onto the plane perpendicular to the radar line of sight to provide an estimate of the area illuminated by the radar for each earth flattened pixel. The uncalibrated sum at each earth flattened pixel is normalized by dividing by the flat earth surface area. The adjustment for gamma intensity is given by dividing the normalized result by the cosine of the incident angle. Pixels which are not illuminated by the radar due to the viewing geometry are flagged as shadow. Calibrated data is then orthorectified to the appropriate UTM projection. The orthorectified output maintains the original sample sizes (in range and azimuth) and was not shifted to any specific grid. RTC data is processed only for the Interferometric Wide Swath (IW) mode, which is the main acquisition mode over land and satisfies the majority of service requirements.
The GEBCO grid is a global terrain model for ocean and land, providing elevation in metres on a 15 arc-second interval grid. It is maintained by the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans under the International Hydrographic Organization and UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission.
The data set represents the shadowing of the Danish altitude model from 2007 (DK-DHM/Terrain 2007). DHM/terrain is a digital model of the height of the terrain compared to the average sea level, i.e.. the elevation of the terrain (DVR90). The model is stored in a grid (raster) with a cell size originally 0.4 m, but which for this data set is down -sampled to 10 m. The data base for the model is based on laser scans from aircraft (Lidar) collected in the period 2005 - 2007 and which has undergone extensive calculations and quality assurance procedures.

U.S.-wide digital elevation data at horizontal resolutions ranging from one to sixty meters. The USGS 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) Datasets from the National Map are the primary elevation data product produced and distributed by the USGS. The 3DEP program provides raster elevation data for the conterminous United States, Alaska, Hawaii, and the island territories, at a variety of spatial resolutions. The seamless DEM layers produced by the 3DEP program are updated frequently to integrate newly available, improved elevation source data. DEM layers are available nationally at grid spacings of 1 arc-second (approximately 30 meters) for the conterminous United States, and at approximately 1, 3, and 9 meters for parts of the United States. Most seamless DEM data for Alaska is available at a resolution of approximately 60 meters, where only lower resolution source data exist.

Dates of Images: Post-Event: May 22, 2026 Pre-Event: May 7, 2026 Date of Next Image: Unknown Summary: These pre-fire and post-fire images pair were analyzed for normalized burn ratio (NBR). The input images were generated from the Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 (HLS) dataset at 30m resolution. NBR is defined mathematically as (NIR – SWIR)/(NIR + SWIR) where NIR is near-infrared and SWIR is short-wave infrared. dNBR is computed by the difference between the pre-fire NBR and the post-fire NBR. More information on dNBR can be found here: https://un-spider.org/advisory-support/recommended-practices/recommended-practice-burn-severity/in-detail/normalized-burn-ratio. dNBR data may be computed while the fire is in progress. This is intentionally done to prioritize rapid data availability for proactive disaster response but means data can change over the course of the fire. Ground slopes were calculated using the slope algorithm in QGIS. This algorithm determined ground slopes in degrees by analyzing USGS 1/3 arcsecond (i.e. roughly 10m) digital elevation rasters in the NAD27 / UTM zone 13N projection. To produce the dNBR and ground slope exceedance map, dNBR data was filtered for values greater than 0.4 and ground slope data was filtered for areas greater than or equal to 23 degrees. These thresholds were defined by NASA subject matter expertise to indicate critical levels for enhanced debris flow risk where both are in exceedance. The locations where both dNBR and slope thresholds were exceeded were initially identified in a binary raster and then vectorized to polygons using 8-neighbor feature selection (data represented here). Suggested Use: dNBR is commonly used as a proxy to identify fire-affected areas. Higher dNBR value are statistically correlated with greater burn severity, where negative dNBR values may represent a re-greening of or growth of vegetation in between pre and post-vegetation. The use of this dNBR product as a quantitative metric of burn severity at the time of posting this dataset should be strongly caveated. This is due to several dNBR limitations: The spectral band selections used for dNBR calculations, and the implication of changes observed following fire in those wavelengths, primarily pertain to how vegetation spectral signatures change in NIR and SWIR wavelengths following charring. Because of this, dNBR will not accurately describe burned surfaces that are not vegetation (e.g. human built infrastructure), and the interpretation of dNBR values may vary widely based on the type of vegetation burned. This dataset has not been validated by independent burn severity assessments. The degree to which dNBR is accurately determined depends on careful selection of pre and post event imagery. An effort was made to use the highest quality imagery (i.e. cloud free) with representative conditions for each scene; however, it is unknown at the time of this posting how selection of different pre/post image pairs could affect the derived dNBR values. The Terra Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) Global Water Bodies Database (ASTWBD) Version 1 data product provides global coverage of water bodies larger than 0.2 square kilometers at a spatial resolution of 1 arc second (approximately 30 meters) at the equator, along with associated elevation information. The ASTWBD data product was created in conjunction with the ASTER Global Digital Elevation Model (ASTER GDEM) Version 3 data product by the Sensor Information Laboratory Corporation (SILC) in Tokyo. The ASTER GDEM Version 3 data product was generated using ASTER Level 1A scenes acquired between March 1, 2000, and November 30, 2013. The ASTWBD data product was then generated to correct elevation values of water body surfaces. To generate the ASTWBD data product, water bodies were separated from land areas and then classified into three categories: ocean, river, or lake. Oceans and lakes have a flattened, constant elevation value. The effects of sea ice were manually removed from areas classified as oceans to better delineate ocean shorelines in high latitude areas. For lake water bodies, the elevation for each lake was calculated from the perimeter elevation data using the mosaic image that covers the entire area of the lake. Rivers presented a unique challenge given that their elevations gradually step down from upstream to downstream; therefore, visual inspection and other manual detection methods were required. The geographic coverage of the ASTWBD extends from 83°N to 83°S. Each tile is distributed in GeoTIFF format and referenced to the 1984 World Geodetic System (WGS84)/1996 Earth Gravitational Model (EGM96) geoid. Each data product is provided as a zipped file that contains an attribute file with the water body classification information and a DEM file, which provides elevation information in meters.
