About this dataset

**UNOSAT code VO20221206IDN, GDACS Id: 1000057** This map illustrates the potentially affected areas by pyroclastic flow/deposits of the December 2022 Semeru mount eruption in East Java (Indonesia) as inferred from post eruption satellite images VRRS, Worldview-3, Spot 6, and Sentinel-2, images acquired on 8, 9, 11 & 12 Dec. 2022 respectively. Within this area, UNOSAT has identified 208 affected structures and 221 structures are potentially affected. Based on Worldpop population data, WSF urban areas data, about 7ha of urban areas are affected by the pyroclastic flow/deposit and about 8,000 people are potentially directly exposed to pyroclastic flow in this zone. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to the United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT).

Documentation

UNOSAT datasets and maps are produced using a variety of methods. In general, analysts closely review satellite imagery, often comparing two or more images together, and determine notable changes between the images. For damage assessments, refugee or IDP assessments, and similar analyses, these changes are then manually documented in the vector data by the analyst. For flood extractions, landcover mapping and similar analyses, a variety of automated remote sensing techniques are used to extract the relevant information which is then reviewed and revised as necessary by the analyst. In all cases, resulting data is then loaded into a standardized UNOSAT geodatabase and exported asshapefiles for dissemination. This is a preliminary assessment and has not yet been validated in the field. It is important to consider the characteristics of the source imagery used in the analyses when interpreting results. For damage assessments it should be noted that only significant damage to the structural integrity of the buildings analyzed can be seen in imagery, while minor damage such as cracks or holes may not be visible at all. For flood extractions using radar data it is important to note that urban areas and highly vegetated areas may mask the flood signature and result in underestimation of flood waters. **UNOSAT code VO20221206IDN, GDACS Id: 1000057** This map illustrates the potentially affected areas by pyroclastic flow/deposits of the December 2022 Semeru mount eruption in East Java (Indonesia) as detected by satellite images acquired on 4 Dec 2022 10km SE Mount Semeru. Based on analysis of Worldview-3, Spot 6 and Sentinel-2 images acquired on 9, 11 & 12 Dec. 2022 respectively, about 460ha of land appear to be severely affected by the volcanic eruption induced effects in the analyzed area of about 2,000ha. Within this area, UNOSAT has identified 206 affected structures and 10 potentially affected structures. Based on Worldpop population data and affected area by the pyroclastic flow/deposit, about 1,500 people are potentially exposed in this zone. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to the United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT).

Potentially affected area by volcanic eruption effect of the 4 Dec 2021 in Java Province, Indonesia as of 10&11 Dec 2021

**UNOSAT code: VO20211205IDN** This map illustrates the potentially affected areas by Lahar and Pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) including geological information of Mount Semeru, Java province, Indonesia as detected by satellite images acquired after the eruption of the Mount Semeru on 4 Dec 2021. UNITAR-UNOSAT analysis used Pleiades images acquired on 10 & 11 Dec 2021 to estimate the affected area by Lahar and Pyroclastic density currents. Within the analyzed area, about 3,220 ha appear to be affected. Based on Worldpop population data and affected area by Lahar and pyroclastic density currents, about 8,400 people are potentially exposed or living close to pyroclastic density area. In addition, base on Esri 2020 Land Cover, potentially affected in tree area ~2,100ha, scrub/shrub area ~ 400 ha, cropland ~ 165 ha, built area ~ 140 ha. Important note: Pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) are perhaps the most hazardous events to local areas during explosive volcanic eruptions. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT).

Indonesia East Java Volcanic Eruption: Damage Proxy Map, Nov 2025

# EOS-RS Damage Proxy Map: East Java, Indonesia, Volcanic Eruption, 24 Nov 2025, v0.9 The Earth Observatory of Singapore - Remote Sensing Lab (EOS-RS) created this preliminary Damage Proxy Map (DPM) depicting areas that are likely damaged on Java, Indonesia, due to a volcanic eruption from the Semeru volcano on 19 Nov 2025. This map was derived from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images acquired by the Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellite operated by the European Space Agency (ESA) before (21 Jun 2025 to 23 Oct 2025) and after (24 Nov 2025) the event. The map covers an area indicated by the white polygon. Damage is shown by colored pixels of 30m in size, where yellow to red indicates increasingly significant ground surface change before and after the event. Preliminary validation was conducted using news reports and ground-level imagery and videos in selected areas. This map should be used as a guidance to identify damaged areas, and may be less reliable over vegetated or mountainous areas. Scattered pixels over vegetated or mountainous areas may be false positives, and a lack of colored pixels over such areas may not mean no damage. This product contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data (2025), processed by ESA and analyzed by the Earth Observatory of Singapore - Remote Sensing Lab (EOS-RS). **More map details and files:** **Legal Disclaimer:** **Credits:** Earth Observatory of Singapore - Remote Sensing Lab (EOS-RS), Contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data (2025)
