One register of places
OrionAI 2.26.0Released 6 November 2026
OrionGIS keeps its own gazetteer: every admin area and named place with a stable Orion id, its codes and names from each source, and the licence of every fact.
Changes since 2.25.0.
#New
- Stable Orion place ids. Every admin area OrionGIS holds, in every country and at every level, has an Orion id that stays the same when a boundary set is reloaded. Areas that disappear are closed and redirected, never reused.
- Codes and names from many sources, in one place. Each area keeps its official codes (ISO 3166-2, census and statistics office codes, humanitarian p-codes), its names in local script and romanised, spelling variants and former names, with the source and licence of each.
- Named places. Towns, villages and other populated places from GeoNames are linked to the area that contains them, so a table that names villages can be placed within its ward or district.
- Codes from statistics offices. The area codes statistics offices use in their own tables are matched to Orion's areas, so later tables are joined by code.
- Only open, attributable sources. Every source is classed by licence; share-alike and non-commercial sets are flagged to be replaced.
- Staff: Gazetteer in Data Discovery: lookup by name or code, and the gap register per country and level (codes, shared names, licence, tables waiting).
