North America Estimated Annual Truck CO2 Emissions 2035

Overview This map shows the estimated annual truck CO2 emissions for the year 2035 along the Mexico City to Montreal transportation corridor. Carbon dioxide emissions are measured as kilotonnes per kilometer. The transportation corridor is one of several that cross North America and the major roads are based on the North American Environmental Atlas' base layer. Major roads are divided, multi-lane, and limited access highways. The roads included are either those that connect major centers of population or selected frontier roads. Roads under construction are not shown. The data were collected by the Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) from various sources as part of the Greening North American Transportation Corridors: Challenges and Opportunities paper published by the CEC. The major source for data on truck movement was the FHWA's Freight Analysis Framework (FAF and FAF2). In Canada, the information included for the estimation came from Transport Canada truck flows. In Mexico, the information that was used included truck flows from the Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes (SCT) and the Instituto Mexicano de Transporte (IMT). Other data sources encompass the Bureau of Transportation Statistics' (BTS) National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD) and North American Transborder Freight Data (NATFD), and other freight databases. Geographic Coverage The coverage spans North America, including Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Data Sources and Licensing Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC). The data is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0), allowing redistribution and adaptation with appropriate attribution. Update frequency: Not Planned Limitations of use: None. Acknowledgement of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation would be appreciated in products derived from these data. Vintage: 2035 Applications (Intended Use) Assessing projected truck CO2 emissions for 2035 along a major North American transportation corridor. Supporting transportation and environmental policy planning related to freight trucking. Informing research and education on transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions. Integration with other thematic layers in the North American Environmental Atlas for continental-scale analysis. Supporting cross-border environmental cooperation and policy-making among North American nations. Files Download

Canada: Road Surface Data

This dataset provides detailed information on road surfaces from OpenStreetMap (OSM), distinguishing between **paved** and **unpaved** roads across the region. Surface classification is derived using a hybrid deep learning approach. For methodological details, see: http://arxiv.org/abs/2410.19874 Recently, we also published a new country-level dataset based on PlanetScope satellite imagery with near-complete coverage of all arterial roads. It is available on HDX under the name Canada **Planet** Road Surface. The corresponding paper is available at: https://arxiv.org/abs/2512.04092 Road Surface Statistics Approximately 2.1118 million km of roads are mapped in OSM in this region. Based on AI-derived estimates: - Paved roads: 0.5001 million km (23.6828%) - Unpaved roads: 0.9257 million km (43.8347%) About 0.686 million km (32.4825%) of road surface information is missing in OSM. To reduce this gap, the Mapillary-derived road surface dataset provides an additional 0.0078 million km (1.1405%) of the missing surface information. Intended Use This dataset supports transportation planning, infrastructure analysis, climate emissions assessment, and GIS applications. AI Features - **pred_class**: Model-predicted surface class ("paved" or "unpaved") - **pred_label**: Binary label (0 = paved, 1 = unpaved) - **osm_surface_class**: Surface classification derived from OSM tags - **combined_surface_osm_priority**: Combined classification prioritizing OSM - **combined_surface_DL_priority**: Combined classification prioritizing DL prediction - **n_of_predictions_used**: Number of predictions used for estimation - **predicted_length**: Predicted length based on DL estimation (meters) - **DL_mean_timestamp**: Mean timestamp of predictions used OSM Attributes - **name** - **name:en** - **name:* (local language)** - **highway** - **surface** - **smoothness** - **width** - **lanes** - **oneway** - **bridge** - **layer** - **source** Urban Classification Attributes - **continent** - **country_iso_a2** - **urban** (0 = rural, 1 = urban) - **urban_area** - **osm_id** - **osm_type** Data Sources The dataset originates from OpenStreetMap (OSM) and is augmented with deep learning predictions based on Mapillary street-level imagery, combined with the GHSU Global Human Settlement Urban Layer 2019 and AFRICAPOLIS 2020 urban layer.
