Create a project
How to create an OrionGIS project, choose its cover image, and what happens after it is created.
Updated 20 September 2026
A project is where a piece of work lives. Create one before you start building maps so that your data, maps, forms and dashboards stay together.
#Create a project
- Open Projects in the sidebar.
- Choose New project.
- Enter a name (required) and an optional description so teammates know what it is for.
- Choose a cover (see below).
- Confirm. You land on the new project's Overview.
#Choosing a cover
The cover is the image on the project's card, so make it recognisable. You can:
- Map location — pan and zoom a live map to the area you work in and capture that view.
- Styles — one of several ready-made map-style covers.
- Upload — your own picture or logo.
You can change the cover later in the project's Settings tab.
#After you create it
The new project opens on its Overview. From there use the tabs — Maps, Forms, Data, Dashboards and Settings — described in Inside a project. A good first step is adding data (see Upload your own data) or linking a form.
#Archiving and deleting
Everything below is in the project's Settings tab.
- Rename the project or edit its description and cover, then save.
- Archive a project you no longer use. It is tucked away rather than removed, and you can Restore it at any time.
- Delete project removes it permanently, together with its maps and their published share links. Forms linked to the project and datasets from the catalogue are not deleted. To confirm, you type the project's name.
